Anna May Wong and Hollywood Film in the Early 20 th Century

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce je biografií Anny May Wong 黄柳霜 (1905–1961), jediné slavné americké herečky čínského původu první poloviny 20. století v USA i Evropě. Text pojednává o jejím kariérním růstu a o praktikách soudobého filmového průmyslu (rasová stereotypizace, upřednostňování bílých herců pro orientální role apod.), s kterými se slavná herečka potýkala. Wong účinkovala ve více než 60 filmech a její filmové postavy měly dopad na pověst Číňanů a čínské diaspory v USA. Práce se dále soustředí na hereččin komplikovaný vztah k Číně, který byl nejdřív spíš chladný. Důležitým milníkem je její první návštěva Číny v roce 1936. Wong, která byla v USA a v Evropě známá pro své orientální role, se po návratu do USA rozhodla přestat přijímat role, které negativně vyobrazovaly Číňany a od té doby hrála jen ve filmech, jež pomáhaly formovat pozitivní obraz Číňanů v USA. Také začala nosit qipao – symbol tehdejších moderních Číňanek. Od konce 30. let dokonce finančně přispívala na humanitární pomoc Číně, která byla ve válce s Japonskem. Metodologické uchopení biografie je kompilačně-komparativní, sekundární literatura je doplněna komparací s primárními zdroji (především dobové novinové články a rozhovory).

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis is a biography of Anna May Wong 黄柳霜 (1905-1961), the only famous Chinese American actress in the first half of the 20th century in the USA and Europe. The research explores the growth of her career and the practices of old Hollywood film industry (such as racial stereotypes, yellowface, etc.), which the famous actress struggled with. Wong acted in more than 60 films and her film characters had an impact on the reputation of the Chinese and the Chinese diaspora in the USA. The work also focuses on the actress' complicated relationship with China, which was rather cold at first. The important milestone was her first visit to China in 1936. After returning to the United States, Wong, known in the US and Europe for her oriental roles, decided to stop accepting roles that portrayed the Chinese negatively and had since starred in films that helped shape a positive image of the Chinese in the United States. Furthermore, she began wearing the qipao – a symbol of modern Chinese women at the time. Since the late 1930s she also had contributed financially to humanitarian aid to China, which was at war with Japan. The research used compilation-comparative method, the secondary literature is supplemented by a comparison with primary sources (especially periodical newspaper articles and interviews).
