Print and online media differences - journalists' point of view

Abstract:

V souvislosti s rapidním nárustem obliby internetu a technologií, které s ním souvisejí, se objevily prognózy krize tradičních médií a jejich možného zániku. Současně však někteří mediální odborníci poukazují na možnost vniku efektivní rezistence tradičních médií, která zaručí jejich přežití. Tato práce se snaží zjistit, která z těchto prognóz je v případě českého mediálního trhu pravděpodobnější. Jako zástupce tradičních médií jsme zvolili tisk, v případě nových médií pak zpravodajské servery. Tyto dva typy médií jsme se rozhodli srovnat za pomoci exploratorního kvalitativního výzkumu. Sběr dat proběhl formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s novináři, kteří mají pracovní zkušenosti s oběma těmito typy. Výzkum byl zaměřen na tři základní tématické oblasti – změny v rutinách novinářské práce, rozdíly v jejich životním stylu a názory novinářů na budoucnost obou typů médií. Zajímalo nás, zda novináři jeden z typů médií určitým způsobem preferují a z jakých důvodů tak činí. Pokud by totiž sami novináři jako původci mediálních sdělení výrazně inklinovali k jednomu typu média, poskytovali by mu tak výrazně vyšší šanci na jeho rozvoj. Zjistili jsme, že oba typy médií podléhají různou měrou vlivům komercializace a bulvarizace a každé z nich nabízí novinářům i publiku trochu odlišné způsoby prezentace mediálních obsahů plynoucích z jejich technologicko-strukturálních charakteristik. Tištěná média si však přesto stále uchovávají svůj status tradičního a prestižního zdroje informací o realitě, a to především díky tomu, že je sami novináři za tento zdroj považují a dodržováním tradičních žurnalistických rutin jej posilují. Naše zjištění prezentujeme jednak ve shrnutích za jednotlivými kapitolami, jednak pak v samotném závěru práce.

Abstract:

In connection with the rapid increase of the popularity of the internet and technologies related to it, there emerged some predictions about the crisis of the traditional media and its possible expiry. At the same time, several media experts have pointed out the possibility of the rise of an effective resistance of the traditional media that will guarantee its survival. This thesis is trying to find out which of these predictions are more probable in case of the Czech media market. As a representative of the traditional media we chose the press, in case of the new media it were news servers. We decided to compare these two types of media with the use of the exploratory qualitative research. The data gathering proceeded in the form of half-structured interviews with the reporters who are experienced in both of these media types. The research was focused on three basic subject fields – changes in the journalistic routines, differences in their lifestyles and the reporters’ opinions on the future of both of the media types. We were wondering if any of the media type is preferred by the reporters in any way and if so, why is that. In case that the reporters themselves as the originators of the media information delivery markedly inclined to any of the media type, they would provide a decidedly bigger chance for its development. We found out that both of these media types underlie the influence of tabloid press and commercialization to a different extent and that each of them offers a different way of media news presentation to the reporters as well as to the public resulting from their technology-structural properties. Nevertheless, the printed media are still preserving their status of the traditional and quality source of information of the reality which is primarily because of the fact that they are being regarded as such by the reporters themselves. This status is moreover reinforced by the journalistic routines that are still being kept. Our findings are presented in the summaries at the end of each chapter as well as in the final conclusion.
