Factors influencing the quantity and quality of Mentha essential oils

Abstract:

Rod Mentha L. zahrnuje 42 druhů rostlin a více než 2000 variet s obsahem různých látek, jež společně tvoří mátovou silici. Hlavními složkami mátové silice jsou především monoterpeny a seskviterpeny. Podle procentuálního zastoupení hlavních složek silic jednotlivých druhů máty rozlišujeme 3 hlavní typy: mentolový typ, linaloolový typ a karvonový typ. Složení silice nezávisí pouze na druhu nebo odrůdě, ale také na určitých vnitřních a vnějších faktorech, jež mohou ovlivňovat kvalitu i kvantitu silice, a to jak pozitivně, tak i negativně. Mezi vnitřní faktory ovlivňující množství a zastoupení látek v mátové silici patří např. odrůda, ontogenetická vývojová fáze rostliny, termín sklizně nebo sklízená část. Mezi vnější faktory můžeme zařadit např. sušení listů, vystavení slunci, metodu izolace či skladování máty i její silice. Máta je pro svoji silici pěstována tisíce let po celém světě. Její léčebné a antiseptické účinky a role v potravinářském, či kosmetickém průmyslu jsou nezastupitelné dodnes.

Abstract:

The genus Mentha L. includes 42 plant species and more than 2000 varieties with various substances, which form the mint essential oil. The main components of the oil are mainly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. According to the percentage of the main components of essential oils, we distinguish 3 main types: menthol type, linalool type and carvone type. The composition of the essential oil depends on the species or the variety, but also on certain internal and external factors, that can affect the quality and quantity of the essential oil, both positively and negatively. Internal factors are for example: the variety, the stage of the ontogenetic developmental of the plant, the date of harvest or the harvested part. External factors can include for example: drying of leaves, exposure to the sun, the method of isolation or storage of mint and its essential oil. Mint has been grown for its essential oil for thousand years all over the world. Its curative and antiseptic effects and its role in the food or cosmetic industry are irreplaceable even today.
