Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá způsoby, jimiž učitelé osmiletého gymnázia v České republice řídí zapojení studentů do výuky během synchronních hodin angličtiny probíhajících pomocí videohovoru. Cílem práce je odhalit, jakým způsobem učitelé během online hodin zahrnujících celou třídu udělují slovo studentům, jak studenti reagují a jak daná interakce dále probíhá. Teoretická část práce popisuje povahu institucionálního dialogu a jeho souvislosti se školní třídou. Jsou zde nastíněny způsoby, kterými se uděluje slovo dalšímu mluvčímu a jak může být organizována interakce ve třídě. Také je zdůrazněno, jak je interakce ve třídě důležitá. Dále jsou objasněny možné způsoby vyvolávání studentů spolu s různými kontexty, které se mohou objevit v jazykové výuce. Tato práce se zabývá interakcí zprostředkovanou pomocí videa, proto je jedna část věnovaná i základním principům této interakce a jejím souvislostem se vzděláváním. Dosavadní výzkum ukazuje, že se pozornost upíná ke střídání mluvčích ve třídě, ale i obecně k online interakci, ale ne už tolik k online synchronní interakci ve třídě, která je jádrem této diplomové práce. Metodou konverzační analýzy je pak analyzováno a představeno 11 ukázek situací, ve kterých učitelé řídí zapojení svých studentů. Nahrávky byly pořízeny během pěti online hodin angličtiny na gymnáziu v České republice. Bylo analyzováno 19 968 slov transkriptu, ve kterém se vyskytlo 133 situací, ve kterých učitel řídí interakci. Dle jednání vyučujícího byly pak tyto úryvky rozděleny do tří oblastí, ve kterých vyučující buď oslovoval jednoho konkrétního studenta, oslovoval celou třídu nebo narazil na technické problémy. Výsledky ukázaly, že v online prostředí se nabízí škála postupů, kterými může učitel řídit zapojení žáků do výuky. Tyto postupy zahrnují odůvodněné či neodůvodněné vyvolání konkrétního studenta, dobrovolné přihlášení studenta, vyvolání ‚kohokoli‘ či úmyslné nedokončení repliky za účelem vyzvat k účasti celou třídu, případně pak poskytnutí studentům více času na přemýšlení. V některých případech mohou učitelé vyzkoušet více postupů v rámci jedné situace, v jiných pak pro zrychlení tempa hodiny odpovědět na danou otázku sami. Hodiny vyučované on-line jsou také ovlivněny technickými problémy, zejména potížemi s mikrofonem. Tyto potíže ale naštěstí do výuky zásadním způsobem nezasahují.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with teacher’s management of student’s participation during synchronous video-mediated lessons of English in an 8-year grammar school in the Czech Republic. The aim is to uncover how the teachers allocate turns to their students during online lessons that include the whole class, how the students respond and how the further interaction develops. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the nature of institutional dialogue and its connection to the classroom. It also outlines how turns are designed and the way interaction can be organized in the language classroom. The importance of interaction in the classroom is emphasized, and possible ways of nominating learners are illustrated together with different language classroom contexts. Since the focus of this thesis is on video-mediated interaction, one part is devoted to its basic principles and its connection to education. The existing research shows that even though a lot of attention has been paid to turn-taking in the classroom and online interaction in general, little research was done on the online synchronous interaction in the classroom which is the core of this thesis. Using conversation analysis as a research method, the analytical part presents 11 sequences, in which the teacher manages students’ participation. The analyzed recordings come from five video-mediated English lessons recorded in Czech grammar school. In total, there were 19 968 words of transcription that were analyzed and 133 sequences were found in which this type of interaction occurred. There are three main areas into which the excerpts were divided according to the actions of the teacher, namely addressing a single student, addressing the whole class and technical problems. The findings showed that in the online environment, there is a number of practices the teacher can employ in order to manage the participation, including justified or groundless nomination of a particular student, student’s self-selection, using anybody or designedly incomplete utterance in order to include the whole class or providing students with increased wait time. In some cases, the teacher may work with more than one technique but in others, he or she might answer the question in order to move on with the lesson. The online lessons are also affected by technical problems, the most common being struggles with a microphone. Fortunately, these issues do not influence the flow of the lesson that much.
