English Language Learning and Speech Problems in Czech Young Learners as Viewed by Speech Therapists

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou názorů logopedů na problematiku výuky anglického jazyka u žáků mladšího školního věku, které současně podstupují logopedickou péči. Práce obsahuje tři teoretické kapitoly. První rozebírá možnosti, kde a od jakého věku se mohou jedinci k výuce anglického jazyka v České republice dostat. Druhá kapitola kromě organizace logopedické péče v České republice řeší také určité druhy řečových vad a jejich prevalenci. Poslední teoretická kapitola popisuje anglický a český fonémický systém, který je následně porovnán. Na základě tohoto porovnání pak kapitola uvádí nejdůležitější rozdíly mezi anglickou a českou výslovností. Praktická část práce obsahuje popis metodologie použité při výzkumném šetření, analýzu hloubkových rozhovorů a interpretaci shromážděných dat. Cílem práce je prozkoumat současné názory logopedů a zjistit, jestli řečové problémy žáků mladšího školního věku jsou dostatečně silným důvodem k odložení zahájení výuky anglického jazyka.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of speech therapists' perspectives on the issue of teaching English to very young learners who are simultaneously undergoing speech therapy. The thesis contains three theoretical chapters. The first discusses the possibilities where and from what age individuals can access English language learning in the Czech Republic. The second chapter, in addition to the organisation of speech therapy care in the Czech Republic, examines certain types of speech impairments and their prevalence. The last theoretical chapter describes the English and Czech phonemic systems, which are then compared. On the basis of this comparison, the chapter presents the major differences between English and Czech pronunciation. The practical part of the thesis includes a description of the methodology used in the research, analysis of the in-depth interviews and interpretation of the data. The aim of the thesis is to explore the current views of speech therapists and to find out whether very young learners' speech problems are a strong enough reason to postpone the beginning of English language learning.
