The impact of childhood cancer survivor's illness on relations and upbringing in family

Abstract:

The impact of childhood cancer survivor´s illness on relations and upbringing in family. The theoretical part of this work is dedicated to family, upbringing, relations among parents and children, healthy family functioning, family resiliency, further to oncological diseases in children and their treatment and finally to the family life with a childhood cancer survivor. The target of the work was to find out if there is an impact of the child´s oncological disease on the upbringing and the family relations. We focused on four aspects of upbringing – inconsistence of parental upbringing, parental interest, control and warmth. Single aspects of upbringing have been studied from the point of view of children who have been healed. We were searching for the effect of the disease on the family and upbringing generally and later from the point of view of age, sex, number of siblings, diagnosis, period from finish of active treatment, late treatment sequelae and of the age of parents at last. The research had an exploring character; the datas have been quantitative examined. This work is a part of a longitudinal study, which was aimed on the quality of life of pediatric oncology patients (“Qolop”). The research group consisted of 89 children who had been treated for oncogenous disease at The Clinic of Child Oncology in Brno (datas were collected during the years 2006 – 2009 during control follow-ups). The Control Group consisted of 269 healthy children. The results have shown that childhood cancer survivors perceive higher interest and warmth of parents and higher control than healthy children. From the point of view of age the highest interest, control and warmth has been confirmed with youngest children contrariwise the lowest values in these aspects have been shown with children with the diagnosis of brain tumour. Higher parental warmth and interest being perceived by girls. Higher warmth is being felt by only child. Children, whose treatment has been finished less than 3 years ago, are feeling the highest inconsistence in parental upbringing. The impact of oncological disease on individual aspects of upbringing from the point of view of importance of late treatment sequelae and the age of parents was not showed as statistically significant. The results of this work have opened many other questions in the area of family and children who survived a cancer illness. As we can see, the impact of this illness on all family members, it is important that our attention would be more and more paid to the quality of life of these families with childhood cancer survivors.

Abstract:

Vplyv onkologického ochorenia dieťaťa na vzťahy a výchovu v rodine. Teoretická časť práce je venovaná rodine, výchove, vzťahom medzi rodičmi a deťmi, zdravému rodinnému fungovaniu, rodinnej reziliencii, potom detským onkologickým ochoreniam a ich liečbe a nakoniec životu rodiny s onkologicky chorým dieťaťom. Cieľom práce bolo zistiť, či má onkologické ochorenie dieťaťa vplyv na výchovu a vzťahy v rodine. Zamerali sme sa na štyri aspekty výchovy – inkonzistenciu rodinnej výchovy, rodičovský záujem, kontrolu a vrelosť. Jednotlivé aspekty výchovy boli skúmané z pohľadu detí, ktoré sú vyliečené z onkologického ochorenia. Zisťovali sme vplyv ochorenia na rodinu a výchovu obecne, a potom z hľadiska veku, pohlavia, počtu súrodencov, diagnózy, doby od ukončenia aktívnej liečby, neskorých následkov a ich závažnosti, a nakoniec veku rodičov. Išlo o exploračný výskum, dáta boli skúmané kvantitatívne. Táto práca je súčasťou longitudinálneho projektu, zameraného na kvalitu života detí po onkologickom ochorení („qolop“). Náš výskumný súbor bol zostavený z 89 detí, ktoré sa liečili pre nádorové ochorenie na Klinike detskej onkológie v Brne (dáta boli zbierané v rokoch 2006 – 2009 pri kontrolných vyšetreniach). Kontrolnú skupinu tvorilo 269 zdravých detí. Výsledky ukázali, že deti vyliečené z onkologického ochorenia vnímajú vyšší záujem i vrelosť rodičov a väčšiu kontrolu ako deti zdravé. Z hľadiska veku sa potvrdil najvyšší záujem, kontrola i vrelosť u najmladších detí, naopak najnižšie hodnoty v týchto aspektoch sa ukázali u detí s diagnózou nádoru centrálneho nervového systému. Vyššia vrelosť a záujem rodičov je vnímaná zo strany dievčat. Tak isto najvyššiu vrelosť pociťujú jedináčikovia, na rozdiel od detí so súrodencami. Deti, ktorých liečba skončila pred menej ako 3 rokmi, pociťujú najvyššiu inkonzistenciu vo výchove rodičov. Vplyv onkologického ochorenia na jednotlivé aspekty výchovy z hľadiska závažnosti neskorých následkov a veku rodičov sa nepreukázal ako štatisticky významný. Výsledky našej práce otvorili mnoho ďalších otázok v oblasti rodiny a detí vyliečených z onkologického ochorenia. Keďže je zrejmý vplyv tohto ochorenia na všetkých členov rodiny, je dôležité, aby naša pozornosť bola čím ďalej tým viac venovaná práve kvalite života týchto rodín po vyliečení dieťaťa.
