Issues of Spatiality in Selected Novels by Virginia Woolf: An Analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je analýzou otázek prostorovosti ve tech románech Virginie Woolfové: Jacobs Room (JR) [Jákobv pokoj], Mrs Dalloway (MD) [Paní Dallowayová] a To the Lighthouse (TL) [K majáku]. Zabývá se tmito otázkami: prostorovou formou románu a jejím zapíinním pedefinování koncepce románu (v JR), psobením prostoru na vdomí vlastního já (MD) a hypostatizovaným symbolem (TL). Teoretické pístupy k tmto otázkám jsou tvoeny: Auerbachovou analýzou mimetismu Woolfové (JR), Bachelardovou fenomenologickou studií obraz s povahou místa z Poetics of Space [Poetika prostoru] a Holtzovou interpretací hypostatizovaného symbolu. Není tedy cílem této diplomové práce analyzovat prostorovost daných román vyerpávajícím zpsobem. Experimentování Woolfové s formou románu promuje každé z tchto dl. Promnlivá forma románu tudíž sousteuje pozornost každé kapitoly této práce na jinou otázku prostorovosti tato práce je strukturována kolem tchto román. Woolfová se odklání od konvenního, temporáln diktovaného vývoje zápletky (obvyklého postupu realismu) a od zobrazení vnjší reality k prostorov uspoádanému textu s pozorností obrácenou k realit vnitní. Tento odvrat ruší pojem objektivity a vede k diskontinuit, simultaneit a / nebo ke kruhovosti textu. Roztržky v temporáln strukturovaném utváí volný prostor v románu, který je naplnn pozorností k estetickému zobrazení / symbolu (hypostatizovaný symbol). Fenomenologicky podložená diskuze ukazuje, jak se v textu Woolfové tradiní dichotomie prostoru (uvnit x vn a soukromí x svt) spájí a nebo ruší. Zrušení takových hranic má za následek splynutí vdomí já a prostoru (zde prostoru msta). Závr zhodnocuje význam prodiskutované prostorovosti pro dané romány a pokouší se o zevšeobecnní. Též zahrnuji návrhy dalších postup pi zkoumání prostorovosti, s pihlédnutím k prodiskutovaným problémm, ale také k tm, které se objevily bhem psaní této práce ale nemohlo k nim být dostaten pihlédnuto, s ohledem na její omezený rozsah.

Abstract:

The thesis is an analysis of issues of spatiality in three Woolfs novels: Jacobs Room (JR), Mrs Dalloway (MD) and To the Lighthouse (TL). The issues of spatiality which I put to question are: spatial form of the novel and its consequential redefinition of the concept of the novel (in JR), the spatial determination of sense of self (MD) and the hypostatized symbol (in TL). The theoretical approaches to the three issues are: Auerbachs analysis of Woolfs mimesis (JR), Bachelards phenomenological study of placiality of images from Poetics of Space (MD) and Holtzs interpretation of the hypostatized symbol. The thesis does not aim at an exhaustive analysis of the problem of spatiality of the novels as such. Woolfs experimenting with the form of the novel makes each of the three novels different. The changing form therefore puts a different issue into the scope of each chapter this thesis is structured around these three novels. Woolfs diversion from the conventional, temporally dictated development of the plot (conventional realist approach) and from the portrayal of the external reality to the spatially organised text with an inward focus cancels the notion of objectivity and leads to discontinuity, simultaneity, and / or cyclicity of the text. The rifts in the temporal narrative create a free space in the novel, which is filled by the attention to the aesthetic image / symbol (hypostatized symbol). The phenomenological discussion shows how the traditional dichotomies of space (inside x outside, and intimacy x universe) are merged or cancelled in Woolfs text, which consequently merges self and space (space of the London of MD). The conclusion appreciates the impact of spatiality on the selected novels and attempts at generalization. I also include suggestions of other possible approaches to spatiality, especially with regards to the problems discussed, but also those which arose during writing this thesis but could not be satisfactorily dealt with due to its limited scope.
