Wage convergence in the European Union

Abstract:

This study examines wage convergence in 22 European Union countries over the period 1996 to 2020 using several methods including beta convergence, sigma convergence, panel unit root tests and time series unit root tests. The aim is to see whether countries with lower initial wages catch up with richer countries over time. The findings of this study show that countries in EU with initially lower wages tend to catch up with richer countries, but mainly due to higher growth rates in the Baltic and V4 countries. Moreover, wage convergence was faster before the 2008 financial crisis. Another finding of the paper is that countries on the southern periphery of the EU are growing more slowly or not at all, which is causing them to fall behind and creating a problem for the future. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out in the thesis to see whether the COVID-19 crisis that affected the values of the measures in 2020 had an impact on wage convergence. However, the result of the analysis was that 2020 had no impact on wage convergence.

Abstract:

Táto štúdia skúma mzdovú konvergenciu v 22 krajinách Európskej únie v období rokov 1996 až 2020 s použitím niekoľkých metód vrátane beta konvergencie, sigma konvergencie, panelových testov jednotkového koreňa a testov jednotkového koreňa v časových radách. Cieľom je zistiť, či krajiny s nižšími počiatočnými mzdami časom dobehnú bohatšie krajiny. Zo zistení tejto štúdie vyplýva, že krajiny v EÚ s pôvodne nižšími mzdami majú tendenciu dobiehať bohatšie krajiny, ale predovšetkým v dôsledku vyššej miery rastu v pobaltských krajinách a krajinách skupiny V4. Okrem toho bola konvergencia miezd rýchlejšia pred finančnou krízou v roku 2008. Ďalším zistením práce je, že krajiny na južnej periférii EÚ rastú pomalšie alebo nerastú vôbec vďaka čomu začínajú zaostávať a vytvárajú tak problém do budúcnosti. V práci bola tiež vykonaná analýza citlivosti s cieľom zistiť, či kríza COVID-19, ktorá ovplyvnila hodnoty meranní v roku 2020 mala vplyv na konvergenciu miezd. Výsledkom analýzi však bolo, že rok 2020 nemal na konvergenciu miezd vplyv.
