Podnikatelské prostředí je proměnlivé a podniky se mu musí neustále přizpůsobovat, přičemž se dostávají do různých fází vývoje, kdy musí řešit různé otázky, ať již typu rozšířit podnik, zvýšit podíl vlastního či cizího kapitálu, anebo zda vůbec pokračovat v podnikání, oddělit neefektivní podnikatelské činnosti či provozy, činnost ukončit či podnik nebo jeho část prodat.
