Role of interspecific competition in thermal adaptation

Abstract:

Organismy jsou vystaveny společnému působení biotických a abiotických faktorů. Ekologický výzkum bývá často zaměřen na vliv pouze jedné kategorie. Typickým příkladem je termální ekologie a ekologie společenstev. Teplotní nároky daného druhu určují jeho časoprostorový výskyt a tím sílu interakcí s ostatními druhy ve společenstvu. Zda mezidruhová kompetice indukuje plastickou změnu preferovaných tělesných teplot, zůstává prakticky neprozkoumáno. Cílem této práce bylo testovat vliv mezidruhové kompetice na teplotní nároky larev dvou syntopicky žijících druhů čolků. Larvy obou druhů se vyvíjely společně nebo samostatně v nádržích za polopřírodních podmínek. Jejich teplotní nároky se výrazně překrývaly. Mezidruhová kompetice měla zanedbatelný vliv na indukci plastické změny preferovaných tělesných teplot. Vítěz kompetice byl současně zranitelnější vůči predaci. Tyto výsledky ukazují, že společný výskyt obou druhů je umožněn jinými mechanismy než vrozenou nebo plastickou odlišností teplotních nároků nebo kompromisem mezi citlivostí vůči kompetici a predaci.

Abstract:

Organisms are exposed to join influence of biotic and abiotic factors. Ecological research has been often focused on the influence of only one category. Typical example is thermal and community ecology. Thermal requirements of a given species determine its spatiotemporal occurrence, and thus the interaction strength with other species within a community. If interspecific competition induces the plastic shift in preferred body temperatures remains virtually unexplored. The aim of this study was to test the influence of interspecific competition on thermal requirements in larvae of two syntopic newt species. Larvae of both species developed together or separately in tanks under semi-natural conditions. Their thermal requirements largely overlapped. Interspecific competition had a negligible influence on the plastic shift in preferred body temperatures. Winner of competition was also more vulnerable to predation. These results show that the co-occurence of both species is allowed by other mechanisms than innate or plastic divergence of their thermal requirements and trade-off between sensitivity to competition and predation.
