Translation practice and feminism: Droits de l’homme – rights of the human being or only of the man?

Abstract:

Tato práce má za cíl prozkoumat, jak se do překladatelské praxe může promítat feminismus a jeho ideje. Zaměřuje se na teoretickou rovinu, kde rozebírá vývoj feministického hnutí ve francouzském a českém kontextu, definuje některé z klíčových feministických pojmů (patriarchát, sexismus) a popisuje, jak se feminismus projevuje v jazyce a v překladu se zaměřením na francouzskou a českou jazykovou praxi. V rovině praktické pak na románu Belle Greene francouzské spisovatelky Alexandry Lapierre ukazuje konkrétní feministické překladatelské postupy a strategie.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explore how the principles of feminism can be incorporated into translation practice. The theoretical focus is on development of the feminist movement in terms of French and Czech contexts, definition of some of the key feminist concepts (patriarchy, sexism) and description of how feminism manifests itself in language and translation, with a focus on French and Czech linguistic practice. On a practical level, it then uses the novel Belle Greene by the French writer Alexandra Lapierre to demonstrate specific feminist translation practices and strategies.
