Manufacturing Au pairhood: How Czech Au pairs Understand Their Role and Negotiate Position in Host Families

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se soustředí na zkušenosti bývalých českých au pair. Hlavním cílem výzkumu je popsat a analyzovat, jak tyto dívky chápaly svou roli a jakými způsoby si vyjednávaly postavení v hostitelské rodině. Studie poukazuje na ambivalentnost role au pair, která vyplývá ze skutečnosti, že au pair prakticky představují zvláštní druh migrantek pracujících v domácnostech hostitelských rodin, nicméně v rámci oficiálního diskursu nejsou au pair konstruovány ani jako pracovnice, ani jako migrantky, ale spíše jako účastnice mezikulturní výměny. Ambivalentnost role au pair navíc odráží skutečnost, že domácí práce, které tyto dívky vykonávají, nejsou vnímány jako profese, ale jako přirozený úděl členů rodiny. V této souvislosti studie věnuje pozornost fiktivnímu příbuzenskému vztahu, který se mezi au pair a její hostitelskou rodinou v mnoha případech utváří a myšlence, že au pair je, nebo má být, členem rodiny. V rámci výzkumu byly provedeny rozhovory s deseti mladými dívkami, které v nedávné době získaly zkušenosti jako au pair; tyto rozhovory posloužily jako cenný zdroj dat pro prozkoumání konkrétních zkušeností českých au pair a zodpovězení výzkumných otázek. Protože tento výzkum je výzkumem kvalitativním, jednalo se o hloubkové rozhovory, při nichž bylo využito zejména otevřených otázek.

Abstract:

The study examines the experiences of Czech girls who participated in au pair programs in the last few years. The main aim of the research is to describe and analyze how Czech au pairs understand their role, as well as to identify the ways they negotiate their position in host family. The study contends that au pair is a role of a rather ambivalent nature and suggests that this ambivalence stems mainly from the fact that au pairs can be practically considered to represent a kind of migrant domestic worker, however within official discourse they are constructed as neither workers nor migrants, but rather as participants in a cultural exchange. Moreover, the ambivalence of the au pair role comes from the idea that the household chores these girls perform are not considered to be a labor but rather the natural activity of any family member. In this respect, the study pays particular attention to the notion of the false kin relationship between au pair and her host family and the idea that an au pair is to be viewed as a member of this family. To explore the particular experience of Czech au pairs and answer the research questions, ten young girls who recently participated in the au pair program were interviewed. Since this is a qualitative research which focuses on variety and diversity of experience that the au pairs have, in-depth interviews with open-ended questions were used.
