Prosocial behavior in fairy tales

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o výskytu prosociálního chování v pohádkách Boženy Němcové a s tím souvisejících proměnných. V první části uvedeme teoretický rámec, jenž zahrnuje prosociální chování, teorie prosociálního chování a související fenomény. Rovněž poskytneme teoretickou koncepci pohádek, jejich typologii a vliv na rozvoj osobnosti jedince. Empirická část pojednává o výskytu prosociálních tendencí, charakteristikách pohádkových postav a toku pomoci. Výzkumný soubor tvoří čtrnáct pohádek Boženy Němcové, jež byly vygenerovány pomocí frekvenční analýzy ze souboru knih, které nám poskytla Městská knihovna v Ostravě. Metodologie zahrnovala obsahovou a statistickou analýzu 128 stran textu, jejímž výsledkem bylo 178 prosociálních jevů. Největší zastoupení náleží altruisticky motivovaným jevům, jejichž tok pomoci pochází především od lidí a dále probíhá mezi hlavními a dospělými postavami, a to v roli iniciátora i recipienta pomoci. Překvapujícím výsledkem je množství pomoci, jež bylo iniciováno převážně muži. Předkládáme také zajímavý poznatek týkající se pravidelné distribuce prosociálních jevů, jež může mít deterministickou povahu v teoretické koncepci V. J. Proppa.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the occurrence with the prosocial behaviour and related variables in fairy tales of Božena Němcová. In the first part, we present a theoretical framework that includes prosocial behavior, theories of prosocial behaviour and other related phenomena. We will also provide a theoretical concept of fairy tales, their typology and influence on the development of the individual´s personality. The empirical part deals with the occurrence of prosocial tendencies, specifications of fairytale's characters and the flow of help. The research set consists of fourteen fairy tales of Božena Němcová which were generated using frequency analysis from an ensemble of books provided to us by the library in Ostrava. The methodology included a content and statistical analysis of 128 pages of pure text which resulted in 178 prosocial phenomena. The largest representation in the total of prosocial phenomena belongs to altruistically motivated phenomena, whose flow of help coming mainly from people and appears especially between the main and adult characters in the role of initiator and recipient of aid. The surprising result lies in the amount of help which was initiated mostly by men. We also present an interesting finding concerning the regularity in the distribution of prosocial phenomena which may be deterministic in its nature and in the closely related theoretical conception of V. J. Propp.
