Contemporary reflection of the Prussian-Austrian war in 1866 through exhibitions at major museums of Czechia, Germany and Austria

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the conflict called the Prussian-Austrian War in 1866 and especially with the current view of society on it in selected museums in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. This war took place relatively quickly, as it lasted not long months or years, but only seven weeks compared to other war conflicts known to mankind. Its two main protagonists, Prussia and Austria, clashed mainly on the territory of the present-day Eastern Bohemia in Czech Republic. That is why this war has an unforgettable part in the history not only of our German-speaking neighbouring states, but also occupies an important place in our history. This thesis gives a comprehensive overview of the events that preceded the 1866 conflict, its course and the traces left by this seven-week-long measurement of the military forces of the two Central European powers in our and German-speaking culture. The main aim of my work is first to give a general overview of the causes of the Prussian-Austrian War, to describe its course and to focus in detail on its decisive battle at Hradec Kralove on 3 July 1866. Subsequently, the socio-historical impact of this conflict on the region of East Bohemia in particular will be analysed. Three of the most important entities will be presented, all of which are based here in East Bohemia, but whose tireless diligence in preserving the legacy of this war for future generations goes far beyond the borders not only of this region but also of the Czech Republic itself. This thesis aims to determine to what extent the Prussian-Austrian War is remembered not only in the Czech Republic but also in Germany and Austria. Whether it is limited to a mere mention in school history textbooks, or whether it is also given more attention, e.g. in war museums. To this end, museum institutions not only here in the Czech Republic but also abroad have been systematically selected so that all the main participants in the P-A War have a place in research. Subsequently, they were all interviewed by correspondence using a questionnaire specifically designed for this research. Those museums from which no response was received were visited personally by the author of this thesis.The aim of this thesis is to ensure that this tragic event should not be forgotten. Additionally, it seeks to explore how the ‘War of 1866 Museum’, as the primary institution dedicated to this event, plans to commemorate it in the coming years. To achieve this goal, a brief interview was conducted with the museum's director, Mr. Mgr. Jan Hrubecký, whose findings are discussed in the conclusion.
