The Limits of Security in the Development of the South China Sea Region

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se soustředí na analyzování a zhodnocení hlavních bezpečnostních limitů regionu Jihočínského moře, jedné z nejdůležitějších strategických oblastí současnosti. Pomocí teorie regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů a dalších geografických podmínek vymezuje region a z bezpečnostního hlediska jeho sedm nejdůležitějších aktérů - Čínu, Tchaj-wan, Vietnam, Malajsii, Brunej, Filipíny a organizaci ASEAN. Na základě dostupných dat diskutuje současné trendy v rozvoji regionu a analyzuje jeho dva největší bezpečnostní limity, kterými jsou nedořešené teritoriální spory a postupná militarizace regionu. V rámci teritoriálních sporů porovnává nároky jednotlivých zemí s legislativním rámcem UNCLOS a u militarizace porovnává vojenské kapacity jednotlivých zemí a zmiňuje vytváření umělých ostrovů s vojenskou infrastrukturou. Současně také poukazuje na podstatnost organizace ASEAN, která představuje jedinou možnost zúčastněných zemí nepodléhat sílícímu vlivu Číny a nastolit stabilitu v regionu.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on analyzing and evaluating the main security limits of the South China Sea region. Using the theory of regional security complexes and other geographical conditions, it defines the region and, from a security perspective, its seven most important actors - China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and ASEAN. Based on available data, it discusses current trends in the region's development and analyses its two biggest security constraints, which are unresolved territorial disputes and the gradual militarisation of the region. In the context of territorial disputes, it compares the claims of each country with the UNCLOS legal framework, and for militarisation it compares the military capabilities of each country and mentions the creation of artificial islands with military infrastructure. At the same time, it also points to the relevance of the ASEAN organisation, which represents the only way for the countries involved not to succumb to China's growing influence and to establish stability in the region.
