Emo Style as a Public Representation of Gender

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci je představena subkultura emo, která se u nás objevuje jako nový fenomén, jenž se týká zejména adolescentů, z aspektu vlastní prezentace genderových identit. Cílem této práce je zjistit, v kterých oblastech a jakým způsobem dochází buďto k rozpouštění homogenních genderových identit nebo naopak k jejich potvrzování. Jako výzkumná metoda byla použita analýza českých internetových stránek o emo stylu. Základním teoretickým rámcem je koncept gender performance od Judith Butler, která je představitelkou poststrukturalistického feminismu. Emo styl je zde charakterizován z hlediska tří dimenzí. Zaprvé se jedná o styl, jenž je spojen s poslechem punkové hudby, zadruhé představuje své specifické názory na život a třetí rovinou, která se v současné době vynořuje nejvíce a je vidět již na první pohled, je typický vzhled jeho představitelů a představitelek, v němž se objevují prvky androgynity. Z tohoto důvodu je věnována pozornost také historickým proměnám módy, v nichž je možné objevit mezníky, které znamenají zlom v přísném pojetí diferencovanosti mužských a ženských oděvů, jenž souvisí především s ženskou emancipací. Androgynní vzhled a životní postoje, které znamenají především vyjádření všech pocitů (i chlapci), jsou nejmarkantnějšími rysy, které potvrzují konstrukci genderových identit, tak jak o nich hovoří Butler. Zejména u chlapců dochází k popření maskulinního ideálu, který je uznáván ve společnosti. S tím souvisí poslední část práce, která se věnuje kritice emo stylu a jeho problematickým aspektům. Ukazuje se, že ne všichni jedinci jsou zcela připraveni přijmout toto dekonstruktivistické pojetí genderu ve skutečném životě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis presents subculture emo, which appears in our country as a new phenomenon and which is associated with the adolescents, from the aspect of self presentation gender identity. The main point of this thesis is to find out in which spheres and how are the homogeneous gender identities dissolved or confirmed. It was used the analysis of the Czech web sites of emo style as a method of research. The basic theory is the concept gender performance from Judith Butler who represents poststructuralism feminism.Emo style is characterized from the aspect of three dimensions here. First, it is the style, which is connected with listening punk music, second it represents its special attitude to life and third it has a typical visage of its representatives with the androgynyty elements, which is the most accentuated nowadays and which we can see at the first sight. That´s why I pay attention to the historical changes of fashion, where it is possible to find out the milestones, which mean the turning point of the firm approach to differentiating men´s and women´s clothes, which are associated with women´s emancipation. Androgyny look and attitude to the life, which means due to express all the feelings (also boys) are the most prominent attributes, which confirm the construct of gender identity as Butler speaks about it. Especially boys deny the ideal of masculinity, which is acknowledged in the society. According to this there is the last chapter, which is focussed on the critism of emo style and its contentious aspects. It shows that not everyone is completely ready to accept this deconstructivist concept of gender in real life.
