Research of development of selected Pilsen city parts using historical postcards and photos

Abstract:

Výzkum vývoje vybraných částí města Plzně pomocí historických pohlednic a fotografií dokumentuje a hodnotí vývoj města ve třech časových obdobích (19001947, 19481989 a 2016/2017). Vybranými částmi města jsou různé úseky Klatovské třídy, Americké třídy, městských sadů a samotné náměstí Republiky. K výzkumu jsou využívány jen pohlednice a fotografie, díky nimž je hodnoceno a zkoumáno veřejné prostranství města Plzně. Hlavním záměrem práce je ale otestování možnosti využití k výzkumu města právě těchto grafických materiálů. Metoda využití pohlednic a fotografií k výzkumu vývoje města je dále hodnocena, jsou komentovány klady a zápory této metody a míra možného využití pohlednic a fotografií pro výzkum vývoje města. Celkově lze tuto metodu považovat spíše jako doplňkovou a tedy i více efektivní v kombinaci s dalšími metodami (rozhovory, dotazníky, studium historických plánů, literatury,)

Abstract:

Research of development of selected parts of Pilsen city by using historical postcards and photographs documents and assesses the development of the city in three time periods (19001947, 19481989 and 2016/2017). The selected parts of the city are various sections of Klatovska Street, American Street, urban orchards and The Square of the Republic. The research uses only postcards and photographs, thanks to which a public place of Pilsen is assessed and researched, but the main purpose of this work is to test the possibility of utilization these very graphic materials for research of the city. This method is further evaluated and commented on with advanteges and disadvantages of possible utilization of postcards and photographs for researching development of cities. Overall, this method can be considered only as supplementary, and therefore more effective in combination with other methods (interviews, questionnaires, study of historical plans, literature, etc...)
