Texas hard-rubbing sutures: Neoformalist analysis of the movie No Country For Old Men

Abstract:

Děj filmu bratrů Ethana a Joela Coenových Tahle země není pro starý zobrazuje boj o kufřík s dvěma miliony amerických dolarů. Odehrává se v 80. letech a rozehrává děj okolo postavy lovce Llewelyna Mosse, který se náhodou dostane na místo činu nepodařeného drogového obchodu. Zmocní se kufříku s penězi, avšak jeho původní majitel najme vraha Antona Chigurha, který se vydává po stopách Mosse a jeho ženy. Později je najat další zabiják, Carson Wells, tentokráte k odstranění samotného Chigurha, jehož metody se původnímu zaměstnavateli přestaly líbit. Chigurh se však úspěšně vyhne všem pokusům o vlastní likvidaci a zabije Wellse a Mossovu ženu. Otázkou nezodpovězenou až do konce filmu zůstává, kdo a proč zabil Mosse, ačkoli určité indicie jsou divákovi přeci jen poskytnuty. Stejně tak není jasné, co se nakonec stane s kufříkem. Na Mossově straně stojí stárnoucí šerif Ed Tom Bell, jenže ani on nedokáže zabránit jeho smrti a ztrácí víru sám v sebe a v celý svět. Jeho role je spíše vypravěčská, působí spíše jako komentátor společenských změn a životní filosofie. Pro Coeny, kteří jsou známí svými "chytrými", originálními a přesto široce populárními díly bylo toto teprve druhým, ke kterém si sami nenapsali scénář. Vyvstala proto otázka, zdali se jim podaří naplnit očekávání svých fanoušků. Tahle země není pro starý je původně román Cormaca McCarthyho, známého amerického autora, který jej původně napsal jako scénář. McCarthy je znám pro svou syrovou poetiku plnou téměř kinematograficky popisovaného násilí i hlubokých, meditativních myšlenkových proudů. Tato bakalářská práce staví na konceptu neoformalistické analýzy definované Kristin Thompsonovou v knize Breaking the Glass Armor. Pokouší se o analýzu syžetu a stylistických prostředků a o vyvození dominanty. Pro tento film je dominanta definována jako "násilná" nebo "nepřirozená" spojení. Práce také propojuje nastíněné koncepty s jinými teoretickými rámci jako např. fenoménem "smart movies" popsaném Jeffreym Sconcem nebo "paralelní konstrukcí" amerických muzikálů jak ji definoval Rick Altman. Dále se tato práce zabývá historickým a kulturně-ekonomickým kontextem zkoumaného díla. Popisem produkčních detailů a marketingových strategií se snaží o vysvětlení komerční úspěšnosti filmu a nabízí vhled do složité reklamní kampaně sestávající z televizních spotů, plakátů, trailerů, kooperací s radiovou stanicí Xfm a masivní online kampaně. Produkční detaily poskytla společnost Miramax, dalšími zdroji jsou rozhovory s tvůrci, jejich osobní poznámky, články z internetových serverů zabývajících se filmovým průmyslem a obsah DVD s filmem.

Abstract:

No Country for Old Men, a film by Ethan and Joel Coen, depicts a struggle for a suitcase containing two million american dollars. Set in the 80's it follows the story of a hunter named Llewelyn Moss who accidentaly comes across a crime scene full of dead bodies, drugs and forementioned suitcase. He gets hold of it, but the original owner does not sit back and hires a serial killer named Anton Chigurh, who sets forth to kill Moss and his wife. Another killer, Carson Wells, is then hired to get rid of Chigurh. Chigurh, though, deals with all the obstacles in his way, kills Wells, the man who hired him and even Carla Jean Moss. Who and how killed Moss remains a mystery, although the viewer may suggest it was a band of Mexican gangsters. Neither is shown what happened to the money suitcase. An aged sheriff Ed Tom Bell tries to save Moss, but fails and in consequense loses faith in himself and the world generally. His contribution to the main causal line is minimal and so he server more as a movie’s narrator and comentator of modern society. For Coens, who are known for witty, innovative and yet still widely popular and profit-making movies, was this only a second work on a derived theme. Thus a question whether this movie will satisfy their fans expectations was in place. No Country for Old Men is originally a novel by Cormac McCarthy, a well-known American author, who wrote it initially as a script but was unable to find a buyer. McCarthy is known for his crude writing style which contains bloody action depicted almost in cinematographical way together with meditative-like thoughts and ideas. This bachelor work builds upon the concept of neoformalist anlysis defined by Kristin Thompson in her book Breaking the Glass Armor. It tries to analyze the plot and stylistic devices and derive a dominant from them. For this movie, the text postulates the dominant of "forced" or "unnatural" connections. It also links the derived concept with several other theoretical frameworks such as "smart movies" by Jeffrey Sconce or "parallel construction" of American musical films by Rick Altman. Furthermore, this work explores historical and cultural-economical background of the movie in question. Describing production details and marketing strategies it reveals the secrets behind it's commercial success and offers an insight into it's sophisticated advertising campaing which consists of TV spots, many posters, online posters, three trailers (one of them R-rated), cooperations with radio station Xfm or even Facebook applications. Production details were taken from official Miramax materials published on official movie site which is not online anymore, but the aforementioned information are hosted on other servers including my source: Made in Atlantis. Other sources for production details were interviews with makers (e. g. with director of photography or the sound editing team), their personal notes (the web page of the author of the music for this Carter Burwell), internet servers dealing with movie industry (the web page of Emanuelle Levy or Movie Marketing Madness) and DVD bonuses.
