The lexicon of British mass media texts: a corpus analysis

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on changes within the lexicon of British mass media texts between the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century. More specifically, it focuses on the frequency of honorifics and pronouns within three British newspaper corpora containing articles from the last two decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. The analysis shows that the frequency of honorifics has declined sharply, whereas pronouns have become significantly more common over time.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zjistit, jaké proměny nastaly v lexikonu britských novin na přelomu 20. a 21. století. Pro analýzu těchto změn je v práci sestaven seznam oslovení a zájmen, jejichž frekvence je zkoumána napříč třemi korpusy sestávajícími z článků v britských novinách z 80. let 20. století po první dekádu 21. století. Analýza ukázala, že průběhem času došlo k výraznému poklesu frekvence oslovení a výskyt zájmen je v nejnovějším korpusu naopak mnohem častější.
