Approximative approach to predictive control for systems with double-integrator dynamics

Abstract:

Prediktivní řízení je v současnosti jednou z nejpopulárnějších strategií řízení. Mezi hlavní výhody prediktivního řízení lze bezesporu zařadit schopnost vyhovět případným omezením s menší náročností, než je tomu v případě konkurenčních strategií, i když větší výpočetní složitost rostoucí přirozeně s délkou prediktivního horizontu zůstává stále jednou z jeho největších slabin. Z tohoto důvodu byly metody prediktivního řízení zpočátku vyvíjeny pro potřeby chemického průmyslu, kde sloužily k regulaci pomalých chemických procesů. S dramatickým nárůstem výpočetní síly v posledních letech však prediktivní řízení proniká do stále nových oblastí. Aktuálně jsou techniky prediktivního řízení testovány a nasazovány i pro regulaci elektromechanických systémů, kde je nutné generovat akční zásah s velmi malou periodou. V případě návrhu prediktivního řízení pro takové systémy je však třeba, i přes veškeré výpočetní schopnosti dnešní výpočetní techniky, podstatně krátit prediktivní horizont. Důležitou otázkou tak je, jak se projeví dramatické zkrácení prediktivního horizontu na samotné kvalitě prediktivního řízení. Tato disertační práce se věnuje návrhu prediktivního řízení pro speciální třídu systémů, jež se označuje jako systémy s dynamikou dvojitého integrátoru. Ve zmíněné třídě se pak práce soustředí na takové systémy, kde velká rychlost generování akčního zásahu představuje požadovanou vlastnost pro ně navrženého algoritmu prediktivního řízení. Práce zkoumá, jak se projevuje zkrácení prediktivního horizontu na celkové kvalitě prediktivního řízení těchto systémů a zda-li je možné případné kvalitativní nedostatky prediktivního řízení s krátkým prediktivním horizontem nějak eliminovat. K eliminaci nedostatků pak využívá právě paralelu řešené třídy systémů s dynamikou dvojitého integrátoru. Výsledkem jsou výpočetně efektivní algoritmy prediktivního řízení, které mohou obstát i ve srovnání s konkurenčními přístupy prediktivního řízení.

Abstract:

The predictive control is currently one of the most popular control strategies. The main benefits of the predictive control include the ability to satisfy the constraints with less effort than in case of other strategies. On the other hand, the predictive control hardly manages to conceal its negatives consisting primarily in numerical complexity growing naturally with the length of the predictive horizon. For this reason, the predictive control was primarily deployed in control of slow chemical processes in the chemical industry. However, the increasing hardware performance in recent years has enabled the predictive control to penetrate into other areas. Nowadays, approaches of the predictive control are even tested and used to control electromechanical systems where the control action must be generated with a short sampling period. Despite the current hardware performance, it is necessary to shorten the predictive horizon in the predictive control design for these systems. Thus, the influence of the dramatical predictive horizon reduction on the control quality should thoroughly be investigated. This dissertation is devoted to predictive control design for a special class of systems that are introduced here as systems with the double-integrator dynamics. This class includes the systems for which it is important to generate a control action very fast. The dissertation analyzes the impact of the predictive horizon shortening on the complete control quality and possibility of elimination of a short-horizon deficiency. To eliminate the short-horizon deficiency, the parallel between the class of systems with the double-integrator dynamics and double-integrator system is employed. This idea results in numerically cheap predictive control algorithms that can fully compete with other predictive control approaches.
