President J. Carter's policy of deregulation and its impact on air transport in the period of the 1970s and 1980s

Abstract:

V bakalářské práci je zkoumán vliv deregulace prezidenta Jimmyho Cartera v kontextu ropných šoků v oblasti letecké dopravy. V této práci je testována vědecká hypotéza ve znění: V důsledku prvního ropného šoku byla nutná deregulace v oblasti letecké dopravy, což mělo za následek nárůst počtu leteckých dopravních společností a přepravených osob v následující dekádě. V souvislosti s testováním hypotézy je v práci hledána odpověď na několik dílčích otázek, které zní: Jakých průmyslových odvětví či služeb se politika deregulace obecně týkala? Jak dokázaly letecké společnosti (Pan American World Airways, Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines) reagovat na deregulační politiku a přizpůsobit se jí v období 80. let 20. století? Jaký vliv měla tato politika na změny cen v letecké přepravě? Práce popisuje změny v letecké nákladní i osobní přepravě v USA, dopady na bezpečnost a tarify letecké dopravy. Dále práce porovnává počet leteckých společností, přepravených cestujících a leteckých mil. Pomocí dat o výši zisků a počtu přepravených pasažérů je rozebrán dopad deregulace na společnosti Southwest Airlines a Pan American World Airways. V průběhu práce je potvrzena hypotéza a jsou nalezeny odpovědi na výzkumné otázky. Deregulace letecké dopravy měla za následek nárůst počtu leteckých dopravních společností a přepravených osob v následující dekádě. Některé letecké společnosti vstoupily na trh a jiné trh opustily. K nárůstu počtu pasažérů nejspíše přispělo i široké využívání slev, které začaly aerolinky nabízet a nižší průměrné ceny tarifů očištěné o inflaci.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis examines the impact of President Jimmy Carter's deregulation in the context of oil shocks in the field of air transport. In this work, a scientific hypothesis is tested as follows: As a result of the first oil shock, deregulation in the field of air transport was necessary, which resulted in an increase in the number of air transport companies and passengers transported in the following decade. In connection with the testing of hypotheses, the thesis seeks an answer to several sub-questions, which read: Which industries or services did the policy of deregulation generally concern? How were the airlines (Pan American World Airways, Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines) able to respond and adapt to deregulatory policies during the 1980s? What effect did this policy have on the price change in air transport? The thesis describes the changes in air cargo and passenger transport in the USA, the impact on safety and air transport tariffs. Furthermore, the paper compares the number of airlines, transported passengers and air miles. Using data on the amount of profits and the number of transported passengers, the impact of deregulation on Southwest Airlines and Pan American World Airways is analyzed. In the course of the work, the hypothesis is confirmed and answers to the research questions are found. Deregulation of air transport resulted in an increase in the number of airlines and passengers carried in the following decade. Some airlines have entered the market and others have left the market. The increase in the number of passengers most likely contributed to the wide use of discounts that airlines began to offer and lower average prices of tariffs adjusted for inflation
