Transformation of the Media Image of Women in Vlasta Magazine

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá mediálním obrazem ženy na stránkách ženského časopisu Vlasta v socialistickém Československu. Práce analyzuje celkem deset článků vydaných ve dvou zkoumaných blocích let: 1949, 1959 a 1969, 1979, 1989, a to v číslech Vlasty vydaných nejblíže Mezinárodnímu dni žen. S využitím kritické diskurzivní analýzy podle Jamese Paula Geeho a operačních módů ideologie Johna B. Thompsona si klade za cíl odhalit, jaký obraz ženy byl konstruován ve vybraném médiu a zda, potažmo jak, se proměňoval v průběhu zkoumaných bloků let. V pěti hlavních částech se věnuje historickému a teoretickému kontextu, objasňuje metodologická východiska, následně se prostřednictvím diskurzivní analýzy pokouší nalézt odpověď na stanovené otázky, a nakonec uzavírá výzkum konstatováním, že k proměně obrazu ženy ve Vlastě docházelo, a to zejména v ohledu jejího soukromého a společenského života.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the media image of women in the pages of the women's magazine Vlasta in socialist Czechoslovakia. The thesis analyzes a total of ten articles published in two blocks of years: 1949, 1959 and 1969, 1979, 1989, in issues of Vlasta published closest to International Women's Day. Using a critical discourse analysis by James Paul Gee and John B. Thompson's ideological modes of operation, this thesis aims to reveal what media image of woman was constructed in the chosen medium and whether and how it has changed over the years. In five main parts it deals with the historical and theoretical context, clarifies the methodological background, then tries to find an answer to the question through discursive analysis, and finally concludes the research by stating that the image of women in the Vlasta magazine has changed, especially in terms of her private and social life.
