Workspace as Network Community: The Quest for Authenticity in Work Life.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá specifickým coworkingovým prostorem zvaným Impact Hub Brno (Hub), který reprezentuje určitou formu pracovního prostoru, snažícího se vyjednávat dvě protikladné tendence, které se začaly objevovat v současné vysoce individualizované a proměnlivé společnosti – jedná se o zachování si individuální svobody a zároveň o zažívání komunity v rámci pracovního života. Cílem této práce je porozumění toho, jak je význam pracovního prostoru konstruován, a zároveň jakým způsobem tento prostor vyjednává ony zmíněné protichůdné tendence. Provedený kvalitativní výzkum je založen převážně na hloubkových rozhovorech se členy Hubu a také na pozorování prostoru. Na základě přístupu kulturní sociologie tato práce demonstruje roli kultury a kulturních kódů v utváření významů pracovního prostoru, stejně tak jako interpretací a prožívání pracovního života jedinci. Analyzování binárních kódu Hubu přineslo zjištění, že je konstruován jako posvátné místo, které umožňuje prožít autenticitu, a to právě na základě protikladné představy profánní korporace. V této práci jsou rozpoznány protikladné kulturní kódy; individualismus a komunita; a Hub jako produkt snažení propojit tyto dva kódy, a to ve formě „network community“. Analýza ukázala, že jsme svědky toho, jak dominantní kulturní kód individualismu není zpochybněn, ale spíše komplementován právě prosazujícím se kulturním kódem komunity. Také bylo ukázáno, že autenticita hraje důležitou roli, pokud tyto protikladné kulturní kódy mají být úspěšně vyjednány.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a specific coworking space called the Impact Hub Brno (the Hub) that represents a form of workspace which attempts to negotiate two contradictory tendencies emerging in highly individualized and uncertain contemporary society – to maintain individual freedom and at the same time, to experience community in working life. The aim of this thesis is to offer an understanding of how the meaning of this workspace is constructed and how it works to negotiate these contradictory tendencies. Conducted research has a qualitative nature and it is mostly based on in-depth interviews with members of the Hub and on observations of the workspace. Adopting a cultural sociological approach, this thesis shows the role of culture and cultural codes in shaping the meaning of a workspace as well as individuals´ understanding and experience of working life. By analyzing the binary coding of the Hub, it is revealed how it is constructed to be a sacred place that enables to experience authenticity, building on the opposite image of a profane corporation. In this thesis, contradictory cultural codes are recognized; individualism and community; and Hub as a product of the effort to merge these two in the form of “network community”. The analysis shows that we are witnessing how the dominant cultural code of individualism is not being contested but complemented by the emerging tendencies to embrace the code of community. Furthermore, it is revealed that authenticity plays an important role when these two contradictory codes are to be negotiated successfully.
