A Translation of English Movie Titles into Czech

Abstract:

This thesis analyses English movie titles and their Czech versions, aiming to the reasons for translating or not translating them, describes used techniques and strategies and criteria for their application. It also describes cultural obstacles making the translation more difficult and the ways how translators deal with them. By the titles which were kept original, the thesis shows possible reasons for keeping the original title and also the consequences of keeping it or, contrariwise, the possible effects on the title meaning caused by translating it with regards to the propagation of the movies, clarity or link-up with their sequels and more. In the titles which lack connection with a plot or a movie theme, the thesis suggests improvements.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá názvy Anglických filmů a jejich Českými verzemi se zaměřením na důvody jeijch překládání či nepřekládání, popisuje používané postupy při překládání a zvolené techniky. Dále práce popisuje mezikulturní překážky při překládání a postupy, jak se s nimi překladatelé vyrovnali. U nepřeložených názvů práce předkládá možné důvody ponechání originálu a také následky, jež nepřeložení titulu vyvolalo a naopak, jak by zapůsobilo přeložení názvu na původní význam s ohledem na propagaci filmů, srozumitelnost, návaznost na minulé díly a podobně. U překladů, které postrádají návaznost s dějem nebo jeho tématy navrhuje práce alternativy.
