Isolation and (HS)-GC-MS analyses of clove and cinnamon oil from products available on the Czech market

Abstract:

Esenciální oleje obsahují desítky nízkomolekulárních sloučenin lišících se (někdy zanedbatelně) jejich chemickou strukturou. Každá z těchto látek má svou charakteristickou vůni, a přestože jsou mnohé v daném esenciálním oleji zastoupeny v nízké koncentraci, jejich vliv na výslednou vůni daného esenciálního oleje je klíčový. V rámci této diplomové práce byly pomocí dvou extrakčních metod (destilace vodní parou a simultánní destilace-extrakce) a dvou různých typů organických rozpouštědel (dichlormethan a hexan) extrahovány esenciální oleje ze skořice a hřebíčku, řadících se mezi koření světového významu. Extrahované esenciální oleje byly následně podrobeny GC-MS analýze s cílem navrhnout strukturu co možná největšího počtu sloučenin v extraktech se vyskytujících. Studované vzorky koření byly rovněž podrobeny HS-GC-MS analýze s cílem srovnat zastoupení těkavých nízkomolekulárních látek detekovaných při použití a za vyloučení extrakce.

Abstract:

Essential oliž contain dozens of low-molecular-weight compounds differing (sometimes insignificantly) in their chemical structure. Each of these compounds has its own characteristic odor, and although many of them are present in low concentrations in a given essential oil, their influence on the resulting odor of the essential oil is crucial. In this thesis, essential oils from cinnamon and clove, two spices of world importance, were extracted using two methods (steam distillation and simultaneous distillation-extraction) and two different types of organic solvents (dichloromethane and hexane). The extracted essential oils were then subjected to GC-MS analysis in order to propose the structure of as many compounds as possible. The studied spice samples were also subjected to HS-GC-MS analysis in order to compare the abundance of volatile low-molecular-weight compounds detected using and excluding extraction.
