Cyberhate: Youth Experiences and Assessment of Attacks

Abstract:

Kybernenávist označuje nenávistné, netolerantní a předpojaté postoje, které jsou vyjadřovány prostřednictvím informačních a komunikačních technologií. Tato disertace se zaměřuje na kybernenávist jako na specifický typ zkušenosti spojené s používáním internetu, konkrétně sociálních medií, a má dva hlavní cíle, které by měly přispět k výzkumu agrese a nenávisti na internetu. Jedním z cílů je přispět ke konceptualizaci kybernenávisti a vymezit ji vůči jinému typu kyberagrese, kyberšikaně. Druhým cílem je prozkoumat, jak kybernenávistné incidenty hodnotí přihlížející z řad mladých lidí. Konkrétně se jedná o kybernenávist na sociálních médiích útočící na lidi s nadváhou a lidi s duševními a vývojovými poruchami. Disertační práce se skládá ze tří studií, které využívaly dotazníkový a experimentální design. Zkoumané vzorky tvořili adolescenti (ve věku 11-18 let; studie 1 a 2) a vysokoškolští studenti (ve věku 18-35 let; Studie 3) z České republiky (Studie 1 a 2), Polska a Slovenska (Studie 1) a Spojeného království (Studie 3). Sběry dat probíhaly v letech 2017 až 2020. Studie 1 ukázala, že kybernenávist a kyberšikana tvořily dva odlišné faktory; byly však obě spojeny s obecným rizikovým faktorem (bifaktorová struktura). Kybernenávist souvisela se zkušenostmi s diskriminací kvůli skupinovým charakteristikám. Ale obecný rizikový faktor naznačoval, že v některých případech může být kybernenávist spojena i s diskriminací kvůli individuálním charakteristikám. Bylo navrženo rozšířit definici kybernenávisti tak, aby zahrnovala i agresi založenou na individuálních vlastnostech, jako je fyzický vzhled nebo postižení, pokud je tato agrese motivována předpojatými meziskupinovými postoji. Další šetření ukázalo, že meziskupinové předsudky vstupují do kognitivních i emocionálních hodnocení incidentů přihlížejícími. Konkrétně jsme při zkoumání kybernenávisti vůči lidem s nadváhou (Studie 2) zjistili, že mechanismus obviňování oběti souvisel s předpojatými postoji vůči lidem s nadváhou a s genderem přihlížejících (muži obviňovali více než ženy). Podobný efekt nebyl zjištěn u mechanismu minimalizace následků agrese. Ve Studii 3 byl navíc u kybernenávisti vůči lidem s duševními a vývojovými poruchami objeven rozdíl mezi rolí kognitivního a emočního hodnocení přihlížejícími v případě facilitativních (tj. pomoc, sdružování) a škodlivých (tj. útok, ignorování) behaviorálních tendencí. Emocionální hodnocení mediovalo cestu mezi kognitivním hodnocením a behaviorálními tendencemi u facilitativního chování, nikoli však u škodlivého chování, u kterého emoce behaviorální tendence předpovídaly. V práci jsou diskutovány důsledky pro praxi a navrhování preventivních a intervenčních strategií a jsou uvedena doporučení pro budoucí výzkum.

Abstract:

Cyberhate refers to hateful, intolerant, and biased attitudes that are expressed via information and communication technologies. This thesis focuses on cyberhate as a specific type of experience connected to use of internet, specifically in relation to use of social media, and has two main aims that should contribute to the research on aggression and hate in media and on the internet. One aim is to contribute to the conceptualisation of cyberhate experience and delimitate it from another type of cyberaggression, cyberbullying. The second aim is to investigate exposure to aggressive content among youth bystanders, specifically their assessments of cyberhate that is related to weight and mental and developmental disorders expressed on social media. The dissertation is composed of three studies that used survey and experimental design. The investigated samples consisted of adolescents (aged 11 to 18; Studies 1 and 2) and university students (aged 18-35; Study 3) from the Czech Republic (Study 1 and 2), Poland and Slovakia (Study 1), and the United Kingdom (Study 3). Data collections took place from 2017 to 2020. Study 1 showed that cyberhate and cyberbullying formed two distinct factors; however, they were connected to an underlying general risk factor (a bifactor structure). Cyberhate was connected to group-based discriminatory experiences, although the underlying risk factor indicated that it could be connected to individual-based discrimination in some cases. It was proposed to broaden the definition of cyberhate to include aggression based on individual characteristics, such as physical appearance or disability, when it was motivated by biased intergroup attitudes. Further investigation showed that intergroup bias enters both bystanders’ cognitive and emotional evaluations. Specifically, in our investigation of cyberhate toward plus-size people (Study 2), we discovered that victim blaming was associated with bystanders’ anti-fat attitudes and with being male. Similar effects were not found for minimizing consequences. In addition, in Study 3, a difference between the role of cognitive and emotional assessment in the case of facilitative (i.e., helping, associating) and harmful (i.e., attacking, ignoring) behavioural tendencies was discovered for the bystanders of cyberhate toward people with mental and developmental disorders. Emotional evaluation mediated the path between cognitive evaluation and behavioural tendencies for facilitative behaviours but not for harmful behaviours, for which it predicted the behavioural tendency. Implications for praxis and the design of prevention and intervention strategies are discussed. Recommendations for future research are made.
