The milanese Passion Diptych

Abstract:

Ve sbírkách Musea del Duomo v Miláně se nachází tzv. Pašijový diptych. Tvoří jej dvě slonovinové destičky, z nichž jedna nese výjevy z Kristových Pašijí a druhá scény po jeho zmrtvýchvstání. V minulosti probíhala debata o jeho dataci, v současné době se badatelé shodují, že se jedná o karolinské dílo vytvořené podle raně křesťanské předlohy. Zatím nebyla spolehlivě vyřešena otázka jeho provenience a funkce; těmto oblastem se věnuje předkládaná diplomová práce. Vychází z nedávného „objevu“ zadní strany diptychu při restaurování a z pramenů zachycujících podobu liturgie v karolinském období, díky níž lokalizuje vznik diptychu a spojuje jej s křestní liturgií, konající se v období Velikonoc. Hypotézu o používání diptychu v souvislosti s křtem podporují i další argumenty, a to jeho ikonografie a návaznost na raně křesťanské umění.

Abstract:

The Passion Diptych is kept in the collections of the Museo del Duomo in Milan. It is made of two ivory panels. One of them shows scenes of Christ's Passion, the second presents scenes after his Resurrection. This master thesis deals with the problem of provenance and function of the Diptych. The scholars discussed the date of origin of the Diptych; they agree now, that it was made in the Carolingian era according to Early Christian model. They have not resolved the question of the provenance and the function of the Diptych yet. Coming of recent "discovery" of the reverse of the Diptych during the restoration and sources referring to the liturgy of the Carolingian period, the thesis localizes the origin of the Diptych and connects it with the liturgy of the baptism, proceeding at Easter. The hypothesis of the use of the Diptych in connection with the liturgy of baptism is also supported by other arguments, i.e. its iconography and the relation to the Early Christian art.
