Jiří Valoch – Czechoslovakia and the World. Limits of the International Cooperation in the Period of the 1960s to the 1980s

Abstract:

Jiří Valoch (*1946 Brno) – umělec, teoretik, sběratel, kurátor – hrál od poloviny šedesátých let a svým způsobem stále hraje významnou roli na umělecké scéně střední a východní Evropy. Zabýval se zejména tématy spojenými s vizuální poezií, textovými intervencemi či konstruktivním a konceptuálním uměním. Valoch vstupoval na výtvarnou a experimentálně literární scénu v polovině šedesátých let a právě toto otevřené a mnoha kulturními i společenskopolitickými událostmi naplněné období dalo výborný základ jeho další činnosti. Disertační práce analyzuje činnost Jiřího Valocha a jeho propojení s domácí i zahraniční výtvarnou scénou a prostředky, jakými tyto vztahy budoval. Vedle toho se soustředí na nové výtvarné postupy (počítačové umění, Mail art, Stamp art, různé formy umění pracující s jazykem, konceptuální umění) a zejména na fenomén sítí, tekutých, vnitřně spíše volně organizovaných kontaktů a vztahů procházejících napříč světem i různými profesními a sociálními skupinami, vznikajících mimo oficiální či povinné struktury. Disertační práce vychází z důkladného studia archivních pramenů, rozhovorů s autory, s nimiž Valoch spolupracoval i s ním samotným, i stávající odborné literatury k tématům věnovaným střední a východní Evropě. Mapuje jednotlivé důležité akce a způsob, jakým vznikla Valochova rozsáhlá sbírka, ale zároveň popisuje mechanismy fungování společenských struktur, které určovaly a determinovaly výtvarný život a uměleckou scénu v období normalizace.

Abstract:

Jiří Valoch (*1946 Brno) – an artist, theorist, collector, and curator – has played and continues to play a significant role in the art scene of Central and Eastern Europe since the mid-1960s. He has been primarily engaged with topics related to visual poetry, textual interventions, as well as constructive and conceptual art. Valoch entered the visual and experimental literary scene in the mid-1960s, and this open period, filled with numerous cultural and socio-political events, provided an excellent foundation for his subsequent activities. This doctoral thesis analyzes the work of Jiří Valoch and his connections to the domestic and international art scenes, as well as the means by which these relationships were established. Additionally, it focuses on new artistic practices (computer art, Mail art, Stamp art, various forms of language-based art, conceptual art), particularly the phenomenon of networks, fluid connections, and loosely organized contacts and relationships that traverse the world and various professional and social groups, emerging outside official or obligatory structures. The doctoral thesis is based on a thorough study of archival sources, interviews with authors who collaborated with Valoch, as well as Valoch himself, and existing scholarly literature dedicated to topics concerning Central and Eastern Europe. It maps out individual significant events and the manner in which Valoch's extensive collection was formed while also describing the functioning mechanisms of social structures that determined and shaped the artistic life and art scene during the period of normalization.
