Determinants of migration and the impact of migration on economic performance, the case of the Baltic States

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza míry vlivu push i pull faktorů na migrační tok z Pobaltských států do jiných států v Evropě mezi lety 2008 a 2020 na bázi panelových dat. Hlavní hypotéza ověřuje předpoklad o pozitivním vlivu míry HDP na migraci. Doplňující hypotéza se následně zaměřuje na prokázání existence obousměrné závislosti mezi migrací a HDP či nezaměstnaností. K testování hypotéz byly sestaveny dva ekonometrické modely, konkrétně model fixních efektů a VAR model. Z výsledků modelu s fixními efekty vyplývá, že rozdíly v míře HDP mezi státy spolu s rozdíly ve střední délce života, míře kriminality, inflace či daňového zatížení významně ovlivňují emigraci z Pobaltí. Odhady VAR modelů, potažmo testy Grangerovy kauzality následně potvrzují existenci obousměrné závislosti mezi mírou HDP a mírou migrace, tudíž migrační toky mají i obrácený vliv na míru HDP. Naopak míra nezaměstnanosti a míra migrace se zdají být nezávislé jedna na druhé.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyze the impact of push and pull factors on the migration flow from the Baltic states to other states in Europe between 2008 and 2020. The main hypothesis verifies the assumption about the positive influence of the GDP rate on migration. The additional hypothesis then focuses on the existence of a two-way dependence between migration and GDP or unemployment. In order to test the hypotheses, two econometric models were constructed on panel data, namely the fixed effects model and the VAR model. The results of the fixed-effects model show that differences in the level of GDP between the given states, together with differences in life expectancy, crime rate, inflation or tax burden significantly influence emigration from the Baltics. Estimations of VAR models and Granger causality tests subsequently confirm the existence of a two-way dependence between the GDP rate and the migration rate, so migration flows also have an inverse effect on the GDP rate. Conversely, the unemployment rate and the migration rate appear to be independent of each other.
