Religious Conflict in the Ferghana Valley

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit, jakou roli hraje náboženství v dynamice konfliktu ve Ferganské kotlině. Z metodologického hlediska se jedná o případovou studii, která je založena na teorii náboženství a konfliktu Wendyho Mayera. Jako základní faktory v otázce rizika vypuknutí náboženského konfliktu vidí Mayer čtyři podmínky – existence kolektivních aktérů, napadení kolektivní domény, vhodné prostředí a zapojení náboženství do konfliktu samotného. Zkoumanými aktéry jsou hlavy tří států, na jejichž území se Ferganská kotlina rozkládá, tedy prezidenti Tádžikistánu, Kyrgyzstánu a Uzbekistánu. Čtvrtým aktérem, zahrnutým do výzkumu je militantní islámská fundamentalistická organizace Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, která hrála v náboženském konfliktu ve zkoumaném období nejvýznamnější roli. Výsledkem výzkumu bude hlubší analýza dynamiky tohoto konfliktu, což přispěje k lepšímu porozumění v otázce, proč nebyl tento konflikt dosud definitivně vyřešen. Po zveřejnění navíc tato práce rozšíří povědomí české veřejnosti o dané problematice, jelikož studie tohoto typu na dané téma doposud nebyla sepsána.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to determine what is the role a religion plays in the dynamics of conflict in the Ferghana Valley. From a methodological point of view this is a case study, which is based on the religion and conflict theory by Wendy Mayer. As a basic factors of the risk of the outbreak of religious conflict Mayer sees four conditions - the existence of collective actors, attack of the collective domain, an appropriate conditions and the involvement of the religion in the conflict itself. Examined actors are the heads of three states on which the territory the Ferghana Valley spreads - the presidents of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. A fourth actor involved in a research is a militant Islamic fundamentalist organization Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which played the most important role in the religious conflict in the defined time period. The result of the research will be deep analysis of the dynamics of the conflict, which will help us to better understand why this conflict has not been solved yet. In addition, after the publication of this work will expand awareness of the Czech public of the issue as this type of study focused on this specific subject has not been written so far.
