Prevalence obezity s veškerými jejími důsledky vzrostla na celém světě na nepřijatelnou úroveň jak u mužů, tak u žen. Na vzniku obezity se podílí celá řada faktorů, ať už genetické, behaviorální, tak i faktory prostředí. Obézní lidé často trpí stigmatizací jak ze strany laické veřejnosti, tak i ze stran zdravotnických profesionálů.
