The Competition of the Definite Article and Possessive Pronous

Abstract:

The diploma thesis examines the competition between the definite article and possessive pronouns. The theoretical part concernes with the study of literature, mainly the grammar books by Quirk, Poldauf and Dušková. However, this phenomenon is not thoroughly described, so the focus of this thesis rests on its own research. British National Corpus, which is a database containing 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, is used in the practical part. The thesis works especially with Quirk's examples and these are analysed in a detailed manner. It is examined in which cases the competition between the definite article and possessive pronouns factually exists, what influences the preference of the article or possessive or if it is possible to use the article or possessive pronoun without any change in the semantic structure (and if there is a semantic change, so what kind of change it is). The phenomenon is thus researched from the point of view of semantics, interchangeability, grammaticalization and stylistics. The particular examples relate to the semantic fields concerning parts of the body, parts of the clothing or family members

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá konkurenci určitého členu a přivlastňovacího zájmena. V teoretické části se opírá o studium literatury (zejména gramatik od autorů Quirk, Poldauf, Dušková). Protože tato problematika není detailněji zpracována, hlavní centrum práce spočívá ve vlastním výzkumu. V praktické části je používán Britský národní korpus, což je databáze obsahující 100 milionů slov mluveného i psaného jazyka z širokého spektra zdrojů. Zde se pracuje převážne s Quirkovými příklady, které jsou podrobeny detailní analýze. Zkoumá se, ve kterých případech existuje konkurence určitého členu a přivlastňovacího zájmena, co ovlivňuje preferenci jednoho nebo druhého nebo jestli je možné použít jak určitý člen, tak přivlastňovací zájmeno, aniž by došlo k jakékoliv sémantické změně (pokud k sémantickému posunu dojde, tak k jakému). Tento fenomén se tedy zkoumá z hlediska sémantiky, ale také gramatikalizace i stylistiky. V konkrétních příkladech se nejčastěji objevují části těla, oblečení nebo členové rodiny
