“Will They Tell My Story?”: Female Characters in Hamilton: An American Musical

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na ženské postavy v historickém muzikálu Hamilton: An American Musical, který sleduje život jednoho z Otců zakladatelů Spojených států amerických, Alexandera Hamiltona. Skrze analýzu různých aspektů muzikálu, jako jsou role v příběhu, symbolika hudby a přístup muzikálu k historii, zkoumá práce to, jak muzikál zobrazuje ženské postavy a jaké širší významy takové zobrazení nese. Text se zaměřuje nejen na obecné vyobrazení žen, ale bere v úvahu i snahy muzikálu o modernější a inkluzivnější převyprávění událostí spojených s ustanovením Spojených států amerických a také zavedené tradice muzikálů na Broadwayi.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the female characters in Hamilton: An American Musical, a historical musical that follows the life of one of the American Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. Through the analysis of different aspects of the musical, such as roles in the story, the symbolism of the music, and the show’s approach to history, the thesis seeks to examine how the musical depicts female characters and what broader meanings such depiction conveys. The thesis considers not only the general portrayal but also the musical’s aims to retell the story of the founding of the United States of America in a more inclusive and progressive way and the established traditions of musical theatre on Broadway.
