The Genesis and the Development of Satire in Roman Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat vznik a vývoj satiry jako svébytného žánru římské literatury. Jádro práce spočívá v prozkoumání zmínek z dostupných pramenů, v nichž se vyskytuje označení žánru (satura, satyra, satira) a analýze a srovnání děl kanonických autorů římské satiry, tj. Lucilia, Horatia, Persia a Iuvenala. Zmiňuje také literární formy z předcházejících období, které jsou dávány do souvislosti se satirou kvůli různým podobným rysům. Je nepochybné, že termín satura měl mnoho významů; v literatuře sloužil k označení básnické sbírky, žánru i jednotlivé básně. Jeho význam zůstane už navždy zahalen tajemstvím, dá se však předpokládat, že svůj původ má v kuchyňském (či religiózním) prostředí. Jako žánr vznikla satira ve 2. století př. n. l., avšak konstituovala se o století později, kdy termín satura použil pro své dílo Horatius. Stejně jako jeho dva nástupci – Persius a Iuvenalis – se Horatius odvolává na Lucilia jako zakladatele žánru. Ze srovnání děl těchto čtyř autorů, z nichž Lucilius je dochován pouze fragmentárně, lze konstatovat, že prvky, které musí dílo mít, aby ho literární veřejnost identifikovala jako satiru, jsou tyto: hexametr, odvolání na Lucilia, kritika, pestrost, vztah ke skutečnosti a dobové společnosti, snaha vzbudit ve svých čtenářích odezvu. Z dnešního pohledu lze tuto počáteční fázi žánru satiry vnímat jako jednu uzavřenou kapitolu (resp. žánrovou variantu) v rámci vývoje celého široce pojatého žánru, již lze označit jako římskou či římskou veršovanou satiru.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the genesis and the development of satire as a distinctive genre of Latin literature. The core of the work consists of the examination of the available sources that contain the designation of the genre (satura, satyra, satira) and the analysis and comparison of the works of the canonical writers of Roman satire, i. e. Lucilius, Horace, Persius and Juvenal. The literary forms of the precedent period, which are put into context with satire because of various similar features, are also mentioned. There is no doubt that the term satura used to have many meanings; in literature it was used to describe a collection of poems, the genre itself or an individual poem. Its meaning will remain a mystery. Nevertheless, its origin is assumed to stem from the kitchen (or religious) surroundings. The beginning of satire as a genre goes back to the 2nd century BC. However, satire constituted a century later, when Horace used the term satura for his work. Like his successors Persius and Juvenal, Horace considers Lucilius the founder of the genre. Comparing the works of these four authors (whereas Lucilius’s work is preserved only fragmentary) there can be found several features that the work of satire has to contain to be recognized as satire. These features are as follows: hexameter, reference to Lucilius, criticism, variety, link to reality and contemporary society and effort to evoke reader’s response. From today’s point of view, this initial period of the genre of satire can be perceived as a closed chapter (respectively a subgenre) in the terms of the development of the widely perceived genre. This period can be designated as Roman satire or Roman verse satire.
