Impacts of Chinese FDI on African economies: meta-analysis

Abstract:

Čínské přímé zahraniční investice zažívají v posledních dekádách v Africe bezprecedentní boom. Jejich přítomnost na africkém kontinentu však vyvolává řadu otázek i kontroverzí. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl identifikovat charakter hlavních dopadů čínských PZI na africké státy pomocí meta-analýzy odborných článků na toto téma. První dvě kapitoly poskytují potřebná východiska pro následnou meta-analýzu, ve které je analyzováno a shrnuto 61 odborných článků. Problematika je úžeji zaměřena na čtyři oblasti: dopady čínských PZI na ekonomický růst v Africe, dopady na africkou zaměstnanost, dopady dle hospodářských sektorů a dopady podle institucionálního nastavení afrických zemí. Hodnocená literatura mimo jiné naznačuje, že čínské PZI mají pozitivní dopad na africkou zaměstnanost a také to, že se dopady velmi výrazně liší v závislosti na hospodářském sektoru, do kterého čínské PZI směřují. Práce navíc zdůrazňuje význam inkluzivního institucionálního nastavení afrických zemí pro maximalizaci možných výhod a minimalizaci negativních dopadů z čínských PZI.

Abstract:

Over the past decades, Chinese foreign direct investments in Africa have experienced an unprecedented boom. However, the Chinese presence on the African continent raises many questions and controversies. This thesis aims to identify the character of main impacts of Chinese FDI on African economies through a meta-analysis that analyses and summarizes the results of 61 scientific studies on the issue. The first and the second chapters serve as a starting point for the subsequent meta-analysis. The meta-analysis focuses on four areas: impacts of Chinese FDI on economic growth in Africa, impacts on African employment, impacts by sectors, and Chinese FDI vs the institutional framework in African countries. The literature suggests, that Chinese FDI has a positive impact on African employment and that the impact depends largely on the economic sector to which Chinese FDI flows. In addition, the thesis emphasizes the importance of the inclusive institutional framework in African countries to maximize the potential benefits and minimize the negative impacts of Chinese FDI.
