Eye movement monitoring in dyslexic children during the reading of a continuous text

Abstract:

Existuje mnoho důkazů o tom, že oční pohyby jsou u dyslektiků abnormální ve srovnání s běžnými čtenáři. Cílem této práce je identifikovat rozdíly v očních pohybech u dyslektiků a běžných čtenářů během čtení souvislého textu. Práce pojednává o teoretických východiskách v oblasti čtení a dyslexie, soustředí se na její příčiny, projevy a diagnostiku. Práce neopomíjí shrnutí negativních dopadů dyslexie na jednice a předkládá možnosti reedukace. Nedílnou součástí práce je seznámení čtenáře s očními pohyby a technologií eye-trackingu. Součástí kapitoly je představení dosud uskutečněných studií v této oblasti. Empirická část práce popi-suje realizované výzkumné šetření a jeho metodologické aspekty. Na základě deskriptivní analýzy byla zjištěna delší doba fixace, vyšší amplituda sakády, větší počet mrknutí, a i delší doba mrknutí u dyslektické skupiny a u skupiny běžných čtenářů byla zjištěna větší fixační frekvence.

Abstract:

There is a lot of evidence that eye movements are abnormal in dyslexic children compared to intact readers. The aim of this thesis is to identify differences in eye movements in dyslexics and intact readers during reading of a continuous text. The thesis deals with theoretical back-grounds in reading and dyslexia, focusing on its causes, manifestations, and diagnostics. The thesis does not neglect to summarize the negative impacts of dyslexia on individuals and presents possibilities for reeducation. An integral part of the thesis is familiarizing the reader with eye movements and eye-tracking technology. The chapter includes a presentation of studies done so far in this area. The empirical part of the thesis describes the realized re-search investigation and its methodological aspects. Based on descriptive analysis, a longer fixation time, a higher saccade amplitude and a greater number of blinks, as well as a longer blink duration were found in the dyslexic group and the group of intact readers was found to have a greater fixation frequency.
