Visuospatial perception in patients with anorexia nervosa

Abstract:

Tématika poruch příjmu potravy, speciálně mentální anorexie, je středem mého vědeckého zájmu po celou dobu bakalářského studia. Zabývá se jí mnoho autorů, a i já chtěla do této problematiky vnést něco svého. Cílem práce je pouze ověřit vizuálně prostorovou percepci u pacientů s mentální anorexií, která by potencionálně mohla souviset s narušeným vnímáním vlastního tělesného schématu. Předchozí vědecké studie potvrdily, že lidé s mentální anorexií vykazují zhoršené kognitivní funkce. Zkoumanou skupinu zahrnovalo 32 žen ve věku 13 – 29 let, které momentálně prodělávají mentální anorexii anebo jsou maximálně 3 roky po stabilizaci. K ověření vizuálně prostorového vnímání byla využita metoda The Visual Object and Space Perception Battery. Výsledky jednotlivých subtestů byly komparovány s normou metody VOSP pomocí neparametrických Mann-Whitney t-testů. Významné rozdíly byly nalezeny mezi populací s mentální anorexií a normální populací ve vizuálně prostorové percepci u více jak poloviny subtestů. Došlo tak k částečnému podpoření mojí hypotézy. Hlavním limitem práce je malá velikost vzorku a že zkoumaný vzorek není reprezentativní. Limity včetně doporučení pro budoucí výzkum jsou rozebrány v diskusi.

Abstract:

The topic of eating disorders, specifically mental anorexia, has been the focus of my scientific interest throughout my entire bachelor studies. Many authors have explored this issue, and I too wanted to contribute to this field. The aim of my work was to simply verify visually spatial perception in patients with mental anorexia, which could potentially be related to disrupted perception of their own body schema. Previous scientific studies have confirmed that people with mental anorexia exhibit impaired cognitive functions. The study group included 32 women aged 13-29 years who are currently experiencing mental anorexia or have been stabilized for a maximum of 3 years. The Visual Object and Space Perception Battery method was used to verify visually spatial perception. The results of individual subtests were compared to the norm of the VOSP method using non-parametric Mann-Whitney t-tests. Significant differences were found between the population with mental anorexia and the normal population in visual spatial perception in more than half of the subtests. This partially supported my hypothesis. The main limitation of the study is the small sample size and also that the sample studied is not representative. The limitations, including recommendations for future research, are discussed in the discussion section.
