The 'Böhmakeln' in Brecht´s Play "Schweyk in the Second World War"

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the work of Bertolt Brecht, the Schweyk im zweiten Weltkrieg. The main theme of this thesis is the issue of the use of a specific language called "Böhmakeln", which was used for the first time by Grete Reiner in the German translation of Jaroslav Hasek´s book Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války. This language was to replace colloquial Czech, strongly represented in Hasek's book. Since this translation does not fully correspond to the original text, a new translation was published in 2014 by Antonin Brouska. In this thesis these two above mentioned translations are compared and it is evaluated, which of them is more suitable and why. The main goal then is to find out why Brecht also used "Böhmakeln" in his book and what consequences it had for his future writing. The thesis also examines, which of Brecht´s life events affected him that much so that he decided to follow up on Hasek's novel with his own work.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá dílem od Bertolta Brechta Schweyk im zweiten Weltkrieg. V práci je zkoumáno, které životní události Brechta natolik ovlivnily, že se rozhodl na Haškův román navázat. Hlavním tématem práce je ale především problematika užívání specifického jazykového prostředku "Böhmakeln", který jako první použila překladatelka románu Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války do němčiny Grete Reiner. Tato zvláštní řeč má nahrazovat obecnou češtinu, která je v Haškově díle silně zastoupena. Jelikož tento překlad ne zcela odpovídá původnímu znění, byl roku 2014 vydán nový překlad od Antonína Brouska. Pomocí srovnání těchto dvou překladů v této práci je stanoveno, který překlad je vhodnější a proč. Hlavním cílem práce je určit, proč také Brecht "Böhmakeln" ve svém díle aplikoval a jaké to pro jeho tvorbu mělo následky.
