Abstract:

Anotace Bakalářská práce „Zora Neale Hurston Rediscovered“ pojednává o životě a díle Americké autorky černošského původu a příslušnice Harlemské renesance – hnutí, které se snažilo představit černošskou kulturu a bojovat za práva černochů - Zoře Neale Hurston, která žila od konce devatenáctého století a tvořila do roku 1960. Navzdory těžkému dětství a dospívání, Hurston promovala v roce 1928 na Bernardu a stala se úspěšnou spisovatelkou, především příběhů, dnes je známá především sbíráním černošského folklóru. Navzdory těžkému životu si uchovala optimismus a naději v lepší budoucnost. Na začátku kariéry byla Hurston populární a uznávanou autorkou, ovšem za několik let její dílo začalo být odsuzováno, a to především mužskými představiteli Harlemské renesance. Negativní kritika byla dále podpořena obviněním Hurston ze zneužití desetiletého retardovaného chlapce, jehož zkreslené podání v novinách způsobilo odmítnutí posledního díla Hurston. Po tomto nařčení Hurston zmizela a žila v odloučení až do své smrti. Cílem mé bakalářské práce není pouze seznámení čtenáře s životem a dílem autorky, ale také poskytnutí informací z doby, ve které Hurston žila, jak byla vnímána dalšími lidmi a především vymezení důvodů, které vedly ke spisovatelčinu zmizení a nakonec dojití k závěru, proč byla Zora Neale Hurton zapomenuta.

Abstract:

Annotation Bachelor thesis „Zora Neale Hurston Rediscovered“ deals with the life and work of a black American woman writer and a member of the Harlem Renaissance, Zora Neale Hurston, who lived at the end of the nineteenth century and created until 1960. Despite harsh childhood and adolescent years, Hurston graduated from Barnard in 1928 and became a successful story writer, nowadays famous and appreciated for collecting black folklore. Even though she had to struggle in her whole life, yet she remained optimistic and hoped for a better future. At the beginning of her career Hurston was a popular and renowned author, but in a few years especially black male critics started to condemn Hurston’s work. The negative criticism was supported by Hurston’s accusation of molestation of a retarded ten-year-old boy and a consequent rejection of Hurston’s last novel caused by the distorting misrepresentation of the case by a newspaper. Hurston disappeared after the incident and lived in seclusion until her death. The aim of my thesis is not only acquainting the reader with the life and work of the author but also providing some background information about the time Hurston lived in, her perception by other people and most importantly stating reasons for Hurstons disappearance and finally concluding why Zora Neale Hurston was forgotten.
