An Application of Animal-Assisted Therapy in the Care for People with Special Needs

Abstract:

Cílem práce je shrnutí získaných informací o animoterapii, alternativní terapii, která využívá zvířata při léčbě různých postižení, ať už vrozených nebo získaných, se záměrem odstranění, případně minimalizace jejich důsledků. Po vymezení pojmu osoby s handicapem a uvedení náhledu na historický vývoj jednotlivých přístupů společnosti k handicapovaným osobám jsou zde uvedeny terapie, které se v práci s handicapovanými jedinci využívají. Mezi speciální terapie patří animoterapie, alternativní terapie prováděná za pomocí zvířat, které je věnována hlavní část práce. Je zde vymezen pojem animoterapie, subjekty, které do ní vstupují, předpoklady a faktory, které její aplikaci ovlivňují. Jsou popsány různé formy aplikace animoterapie, ať už z hlediska použité metody nebo z hlediska použitého druhu zvířete, podrobněji pak canisterapie, hipoterapie a felinoterapie. Kromě historie a metod provádění jednotlivých druhů animoterapie je zde poukázáno na využití v praxi, na zkušenosti s aplikací a na celkový vliv na klienty. V závěru je nastíněn směr možného výzkumu, který by v určitém regionu zmapoval využívání této metody a důvody pro nebo proti její aplikaci do praxe.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to summarise scholarly information on animotherapy, the alternative therapy in which animals are used in the treatment of various, innate or acquired, disabilities in order to eliminate or minimise their consequences. After defining the concept of a ?person with special needs? and outlining the historical development of approaches of societies to these persons, the therapies that are used in relation to people with special needs are mentioned. One of them is animotherapy, an alternative therapy conducted with the assistance of animals, which is the issue of the main part of this thesis. In this part, the concept of ?animotherapy?, actors involved in it and preconditions and factors that influence its application are defined. In addition, various forms of the application of animotherapy, either from the point of view of the applied method or from the point of view of the kind of animal, are described, in particular canistherapy, hippotherapy and felinotherapy. Besides the history and methods of particular types of animotherapy, the practical utilization of animotherapy, experiences with its application and its influence on clients are pointed out. In the conclusion, a direction of the possible future research is outlined. This research would map applications of this method in a particular region and consider reasons for or against its use in practice.
