Institution and Viewer: Factors Influencing the Viewer Experience within the Framework of Contemporary Art Institutions

Abstract:

Jádrem disertační práce je pokusit se popsat nedávné posuny ve zkoumání diváckého prožitku současného umění na poli uměleckých institucí, jako jsou galerie, muzea umění nebo centra současného umění. Teoretická část práce tuto problematiku analyzuje v širším rámci procesu tzv. demokratizaci umění, nedávných institucionálních dějin a aktuálních přístupů k novému institucionalismu či edukativnímu obratu, kterými řada dnešních institucí prochází. Pro účel pochopení povahy prožitku jejich návštěvníků a klíčových faktorů, které jej ovlivňují, byly uskutečněny dvě kvalitativní výzkumné studie v českém a americkém prostředí, přičemž první z nich zážitky diváků posuzovala ve výstavním kontextu, zatímco druhá se zabývala specifickou událostí otevřených ateliérů umělců. Zamyšlení nad současnou teorií i praxí spolu s výstupy z výzkumů by mohlo být příspěvkem k hlubšímu poznání dynamiky kvalitativně nové situace, která mezi současným uměním a jeho diváky, potažmo širší společností vzniká.

Abstract:

The focus of this dissertation thesis lies in exploring the recent shift in the perception of viewer experiences of encountering contemporary art within the framework of visual art institutions such as art galleries, museums, or contemporary art centers. The theoretical framework of the thesis lies in analyzing the process of the so-called democratization of art, recent institutional history, current notions of the new institutionalism and the educational turn, which many of the institutions in question undergo. Two qualitative research studies taking place in the Czech and American context respectively were conducted for the purpose of this thesis, exploring the nature of nowadays viewers’ experience and key factors influencing it firstly in the exhibition setting and secondly during a specific event of artists’ open studios. The reflection on both the theory and institutional practice along with the conducted research results aims to contribute to the present discourse enhancing the understanding of the dynamism of a qualitatively new situation, which is developing between contemporary art and its viewers, or the broader society in general.
