Linguistic Borrowings in Sports Language: Naming Sports

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and then analyse the linguistic borrowings used for naming sports in the Spanish language. The work will be divided into two parts: theoretical and practical one. In the theoretical part, we will briefly discuss the history and development of the Spanish lexicon, describing the different stages of the Spanish language. We will also focus on foreign languages that have had a significant influence on the vocabulary of the Spanish language. Furthermore, we will outline the chapter of Anglicisms in Spanish lexicon and their classification according to several given authors. We conclude the theoretical part with the basic characteristics of the sport language. In the practical part, we will work with specific sports, namely those whose names are based on linguistic borrowings from foreign languages. We will select ten of these sports: football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, ping-pong, baseball, cricket, water polo, bochas and petanque. We will analyze the evolution of their definition in the dictionary as well as the use of a given name based on a diatopic variant. In the conclusion, we will indicate which name variations are most common in what areas and to what extent their structure has been changed.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je popsat a následně analyzovat lingvistické výpůjčky, které se používají k pojmenování sportů ve španělském jazyce. Práce bude rozdělena do dvou částí: teoretické a praktické. V teoretické části se v menším měřítku budeme zabývat historií a vývojem španělského lexika, jehož jednotlivé etapy popíšeme. Zaměříme se také na cizí jazyky, které měly výrazný vliv na slovní zásobu španělského jazyka. Dále nastíníme problematiku anglicismů ve španělském lexiku a jejich klasifikaci podle několika daných autorů. Teoretickou část zakončíme základními charakteristikami sportovního jazyka. V části praktické již budeme pracovat s konkrétními sporty, konkrétně s těmi, jejichž název vznikl na základě lingvistických výpůjček z cizích jazyků. Těchto sportů vybereme deset: fotbal, volejbal, basketbal, tenis, ping-pong, baseball, kriket, vodní pólo, bochas, petank. Budeme analyzovat vývoj jejich definice ve slovníku a dále i použití daného názvu na základě diatopické varianty. V závěru uvedeme, které názvové variace se nejvíce vyskytují v daných oblastech a v jaké míře byla změněna jejich struktura.
