The process of formation and development of dental caries is influenced by a balance between pathological factors that include presence of cariogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus spp. and Actinomycetes spp.), frequent ingestion of fermentable carbohydrates and salivary dysfunction, and protective factors.
