Attachment in Close Relationships and Fears in Late Adolescence: Relation to Emotional Expressivity

Abstract:

Cílem studie bylo osvětlit dosavadní nesourodá zjištění ohledně vztahu mezi citovou vazbou a strachy. Předpokládali jsme, že tento vztah souvisí s rozdílnou mírou emoční expresivity jednotlivých stylů citové vazby, která se projevuje ve sdílnosti ohledně prožívaných strachů v dotaznících. Soudili jsme, že vyšší míra expresivity stojí i v pozadí nálezů ohledně větší bázlivosti žen, a proto jsme sledovali také souvislosti s pohlavím a genderovou identitou. K získání dat jsme použili dotazníkové metody; pro určení stylu citové vazby metodu Relationship Questionnaire (RQ), pro zachycení verbální expresivity submisivních negativních emocí Distress Disclosure Index (DDI). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 154 adolescentů (80 mužů, 74 žen) ve věku od 17 do 18 let. Výsledky naznačily, že emoční expresivita nehraje v míře strachu zjišťované pomocí dotazníků významnou roli. V rámci citové vazby souvisel s emoční expresivitou zejména vnitřní model druhých – adolescenti s vyšší mírou vyhýbání vyjadřovali své pocity méně často. V míře strachu hrál roli model sebe sama – adolescenti s vyšší mírou úzkosti vypovídali o větším strachu. Ačkoliv s vyšší emoční expresivitou souvisela především feminita, nebyla tato socializační složka u bázlivosti tak významná. Celkovou míru strachu nejsilněji predikovalo naopak pohlaví; ženy vypovídaly o větším strachu než muži.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to explain present rambling findings on the relationship between attachment and fears. We have presumed that this relationship is related with dissimilar level of emotional expressivity of individual kinds of attachment styles which can be observed in the sharing of fears in self-reports. We have assumed that the higher rate of expressivity can be found in the background of findings reporting higher fearfulness of women. That is why we have observed connections between sex and gender identity. We used questionnaire methods for collecting the data, Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) to determine the attachment style and Distress Disclosure Index (DDI) to determine verbal expressivity of negative-submissive emotions. The sample consisted of 154 adolescents (80 men, 74 women) in the age of 17 to 18 years. The results have suggested that the emotional expressivity does not have significant role in the overall fear score recognized by the self-reports. In the framework of attachment, inner working model of other was important in the emotional expressivity - adolescent with higher rate of avoidance were less expressing their feelings. Model of self was important in the level of fear - adolescents with higher rate of anxiety were reporting higher level of fear. Although feminity was particularly related to emotional expressivity, this socialization element was not so important regarding to timidity. On the contrary, the subject’s sex was the best predictor of the overall fear score - women were reporting more fears than men.
