Abstract:

The thesis aims to provide space for theoretical support to political-risk assessment. It seeks to map the situation of political-risk analysis and find possible source of theoretical remedy. The first part of the essay examines recipients of the political-risk assessment and includes an analysis of their needs. The foreign direct investment and foreign lending are identified as key sectors and are treated in detail. The second part researches into the current state of supply. It explores methods, institutional and organizational basis of political-riskassessment. It also delineates fundamental principles of political-risk assessment. The findings of this fundamental analysis are applied to two sample methods of current commercial political risk assessment. The subsequent evaluation of usefulness of the current political-risk assessment reveals considerable shortcomings and supports the calls for theoretical support. Political stability defined as persistence of government patterns is identified as a matrix to cater the political-risk assessment needs. Building on a review of classical theoretical solutions of political stability, the essay finally offers a synthesized version of Adam Przeworki’s concept of political regime dynamics.
