Doing social work in context of discursive struggle between professional and spiritual discourses – study of critical incidents in crisis intervention

Abstract:

Zaměření výzkumu: Předkládaná disertační práce se věnuje problematice konstrukce „dělání sociální práce“ v situacích, ve kterých se střetává / setkává profesionální diskurs s diskursem spirituálním a to v rámci krizové intervence z pohledu sociálních pracovníků a pracovnic, křesťanů a křesťanek. V textu práce odpovídám na základní výzkumnou otázku: Jak sociální pracovnice a pracovníci, křesťanky a křesťané, konstruují dělání sociální práce v rámci střetávání diskursu spirituality a diskursu profesionality v kontextu krizové intervence? Teoretický rámec: V konceptuální části disertační práce představuji teoretické výchozí předpoklady kvalitativně realizovaného výzkumu. Chápu sociální práci jako diskursivně konstruovanou v kontextu post-moderní doby a pro definování výchozího teoretického rámce využívám především post-moderní varianty konceptu Person-in-Environment, jež je výslednou kombinací původní funkcionalistické podoby a Strukturační teorie (teorie strukturace). Na základně tohoto rámce pak definuji Model výkonu sociální práce, v rámci něhož je konceptuálně uchopen termín „dělání sociální práce“. Termín konstrukce je konceptualizován v návaznosti na teze Geeho (2010), jež o konstrukci v rámci diskursivní analýzy postuloval a také (nejen z důvodu provázanosti konceptuální části práce) z tvrzení Giddense (2009) a jeho uchopení konstrukce situací. Protože v dosavadní odborné literatuře sociální práce absentuje uchopení diskursivního střetávání, vycházím z tezí dialektické teorie vztahů (Relational Dialectics Theory) a v ní realizované konceptualizace střetávání (Baxter, 2011). Podstatnou součástí teoretické části je vymezení diskursu profesionality (v moderní a post-moderních variantách a diskursu spirituality jak v jeho obecném uchopení, tak v rámci základních tezí o křesťanské spiritualitě. V první části práce jsou také popsány výstupy dvou mnou realizovaných výzkumů, které se zaměřovaly na analýzu odborných publikací z hlediska vztahu profesionality a spirituality a to jak z hlediska historického, tak z hlediska současného uchopení vztahu obou diskursů. Na základě konceptualizace byly formulovány a následně operacionalizovány dílčí výzkumné otázky. Pro jejich formulaci bylo zásadní také využití techniky kritického incidentu, jež byla volena s ohledem na potenciální šíři zkoumaného jevu. Metodologický rámec výzkumu se opírá o kvalitativní metodologii. Tvorba dat probíhala polo-strukturovanými rozhovory a sběrem materiálů organizací, v nichž komunikační partnerky pracují (webové stránky, etické kodexy, výroční zprávy, letáky pro klienty a bylo-li to možné, také metodiky a popsané postupy práce). Při analýze dat a formulaci odpovědi na položenou základní výzkumnou otázku byly využity prvky konstruktivistické varianty zakotvené teorie a manifestní obsahové analýzy. Respondenti: Data byla tvořena v interakci se šesti komunikačními partnerkami (průměrná délka základních rozhovorů byla 140:05 minut; rozsah od zhruba 96 minut do 184 minut) pracujícími ve třech organizacích, které odpovídaly kritériím výběru jednotky zjišťování. Kromě těchto uvedených základních rozhovorů byly s některými komunikačními partnerkami realizovány dodatečné rozhovory a to v průběhu fáze vynořování modelu. Dalšími materiály využité při analýze dat, byly obsahy webových stránek organizací, metodik, výročních zpráv a letáků pro veřejnost. Celkově bylo analyzováno (včetně přepisů základních rozhovorů a těch dodatečných rozhovorů, které bylo možné pro analýzu využít – přinášely doplňující informace k nejasným bodům modelu) 36 dokumentů. Abstract:

a to, že komunikační partnerky pracují ve dvou odlišných organizačních rámcích, Profesionálním a v Organizačním rámci se zviditelněnou spiritualitou. Profesionalitu spojují komunikační partnerky na jedné straně se znalostmi a dovednostmi získanými ve výcviku krizové intervence (výcviková profesionalita) a na straně druhé (v Organizačním rámci se zviditelněnou spiritualitou) také se stanovováním hranic profesionálního dělání sociální práce v organizaci (výcvikově-organizační profesionalita). Pro samotné dělání sociální práce v situacích střetávání profesionálního a spirituálního diskursu má ale důležitou roli právě výcviková profesionalita. Právě míra příklonu k roli výcvikové profesionality pak ovlivňuje, jestli je „dělání sociální práce“ vnímáno v kontextu spirituálního, spirituálně orientovaného, spirituálně senzitivního, či profesionálního rámce. Posuny v rámci Příklonu k roli výcvikové profesionality nejsou dány stabilně s ohledem na obecnou preferenci, ale vznikají v reflexi tří kategorií navrhovaného Interakčního modelu integrace spirituality a to Sociálního dobra, klientského systému a spirituality pracovníků. Tento model je zasazen do Rámce polí spirituálně senzitivní / orientované sociální práce. Byť je v odborné literatuře popsána velká řada intervencí, které se zacilují na různou práci se spiritualitou klienta, komunikační partnerky referují jen o některých z nich a společně zmiňují, že nebyly v tématu práce se spiritualitou podrobněji proškoleny. Limity: zásadními limitami výzkumu je málo početný vzorek, který byl dán stanovenými kritérii pro jednotku zjišťování a také specifikací základní výzkumné otázky. Ten měl vliv především na teoretickou saturaci dat, jíž je podle některých ale možné dosáhnout i s tímto počtem komunikačních partnerů. Tento výzkum se tak řadí do výzkumů postavených na málo početných vzorcích. Druhým limitem výzkumu je využití již zmíněné techniky kritického incidentu, která ovlivnila popisované situace v tom smyslu, že byly komunikační partnerky vedeny k popisu situace, kde ke střetávání / setkávání z jejich pohledu dochází výrazně. Limity výzkumu jsou v textu práce diskutovány. Aplikaci výzkumných zjištění vnímám především ve dvou úrovních. Za prvé publikování (jak dosavadním, tak plánovaný) zjištění především o výcvikové profesionalitě, dynamice oscilace mezi spiritualitou a Rolí výcvikové profesionality a spirituálně kotvených intervencích podpořit diskusi o profesionální sociální práci a postavení spirituality v ní. Druhou oblastí je pak modifikaci částí výcviku krizové intervence o spiritualitě směrem k obecnějším tezím o využívání spirituálně kotvených intervencí a vytvoření kurzů následného vzdělávání, které budou na téma spirituality v sociální práci zaměřeny.

Abstract:

Research focus: The present dissertation deals with the issue of the construction of "doing social work" in situations in which professional discourse meets with / struggle with spiritual discourse in the context of crisis intervention from the point of view of Christian social workers. In the text, I answer the basic research question: How Christian social workers construct doing social work in the context of discursive struggle between spirituality and professionalism in the context of crisis intervention? Theoretical framework: In the conceptual part of the dissertation thesis I present the theoretical prerequisites for qualitatively realized research. I understand social work as a discursively re/constructed in the context of post-modernism, and use the post-modern variant of the Person-in-Environment concept, which is the resultant combination of the original functionalist form and Structuration theory, to define the initial theoretical framework. On the basis of this framework, I define the Model of Performance of Social Work within which conceptually define the term "doing social work". The term construction is conceptualized in connection with Gee´s (2010) work about discourse analysis, and also (not only because of the interconnection of the conceptual part of the thesis) Giddens' claims (2009) and his grasp of the construction of the situations. Because of the lack of understanding of the discursive struggle in the current literature of social work, I follow the thesis of Relational Dialectics Theory and the conceptualization of discursive struggle (Baxter, 2011). A fundamental spect of the theoretical part is the definition of the discourse of professionalism (in modern and post-modern warranties) and the discourse of spirituality (both in its general grasp and in the basic theses of Christian spirituality). The first part of the text also describes the outputs of two researches conducted by me with aim to analyze professional publications in terms of the relation between professionalism and spirituality, both in terms of historical and contemporary grasp of the relationship between the two discourses and on the basis of conceptualization, partial research questions were formulated and subsequently operationalized. For the proces of operationalisaton is crucial also appliacation of Critical incident technique. This technique was chosen in view of the potential breadth of the phenomenon under investigation. Methodological framework of research is based on qualitative methodology. Data creation took place through semi-structured interviews and collection of the materials of the organizations in which the communication partners are working (websites, Codes of ethics, annual reports, client flyers and, where possible, the documents described working procedures). In analyzing the data and formulating the answer to the basic research question, elements of constructivist variant of gounded theory and manifest content analysis were used. Respondents: The data was generated in interaction with six communication partners (the average length of the basic interviews was 140: 05 minutes, ranging from about 96 minutes to 184 minutes) working in three organizations that met the criteria for selecting a survey unit. In addition to the above mentioned bases, additional interviews were conducted with some communication parnters during the model's modeling phase. Other materials used to analyze the data were the content of the website of organizations, methodologies, annual reports and leaflets for the public. Overall, 36 documents was analyzed (including transcripts of the basic interviews and those additional interviews that could be used for the analysis to provide additional information to the unclear points of the model). Main Findings: Outcomes of research show that communication partners work in two different organizational frameworks, Professional and Organizational frameworks with visible spirituality. Abstract:

combines Professionality on the one hand with knowledge and skills gained in crisis intervention training (trained professionality) and on the other (in the Organizational framework with visible spirituality) also with the determination of the boundaries of professional social work in the organization (trained-organizational professionality). However, it is the trained professionality that plays an important role in doing social work itself in situations of discursive struggle betwee professional and spiritual discourses. It is precisely the degree of inclination to the role of trained professionalism that affects whether "doing social work" is perceived in the context of a spiritual, spiritually oriented, spiritually sensitive or professional framework (acording to research outputs spiritual-situantional oriented version was formulated in Conclusion). Shifts in the inclination to the role of trained professionalism are not given in a stable way with regard to general preference, but they arise in the reflection of three categories of the proposed Interactive Model of the integration of spirituality: the Social Good, the client system and the spirituality of the workers. This model is embedded in the Framework of Spiritually Sensitive / Oriented Social Work. While a large number of interventions that focus on different work with the client's spirituality are described in the professional literature, communication partners refer only to some of them and together they mention that they have not been more thoroughly trained in the subject of working with spirituality. Limits: The baseline of research limits is a small sample that was determined by the set criteria for the survey unit as well as the specification of the basic research question. This was mainly about the theoretical saturation of data, which, according to some, is also possible with the number of communication partners. This research is therefore part of research based on few samples. The second limit of the research is the use of the already mentioned technique of a critical incident, which influenced the described situations in the sense that the communication partners were led to describe the situation where the discursive struggle from their point of view are significant. The limits of the research are discussed in the text of the thesis. I see the application of research findings in two levels. For the first publication (both the current and the planned) about trained professionalism, dynamics of oscilation between spirituality and Role of trained professionalism, and spiritually anchored interventions with aim to support the discussion of professional social work and the position of spirituality in it. The second area is to modify the parts of the crisis intervention training on spirituality towards more general issues about the use of spiritually anchored interventions and the development of life-long education courses that will focus on spirituality in social work.
