Response of benthic macroinvertebrates to stream restoration in the Šumava NP

Abstract:

Stream restorations are becoming increasingly common, as the ecological status of streams declines worldwide. Their usual aim is to restore habitat heterogeneity, aquatic communities and ecosystem services of streams. While habitat heterogeneity can be reconstructed by various restoration measures, recovery of the aquatic community can be limited by multiple factors. Most of the time, it is the absence of source populations in the stream surroundings and inadequate water quality, that impedes the colonisation of technically restored streams. If there is sufficient colonisation potential in the five-kilometre radius of a stream and the water quality is not adversely affected by agriculture or urbanisation, stream restorations can contribute to the recovery of natural biodiversity. Restored streams in the Šumava National Park, namely Hučina stream, Jedlový brook and Žlebský brook, have a great potential for an improvement. They were reconstructed by complex restoration measures to resemble their former (natural) state, which improved hydrological conditions in the floodplain. These streams are situated in a national park, where, due to protection, there are plenty of colonists and good water quality. Therefore, the restoration of biodiversity in these streams should not be significantly constrained. In this thesis, I analyse colonisation of three restored streams by mayfly (Ephemeroptera), stonefly (Plecoptera) and caddisfly (Trichoptera) larvae (EPT assemblages) during the first three years after restoration, with an emphasis on their abundance, diversity and species composition. Furthermore, EPT assemblages of the restored streams were compared to those of the reference streams nearby and pre- and post-restoration EPT assemblages were compared in two of three studied streams. All streams were successfully colonised by mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies and their abundances were already similar to those in reference streams during the first year after restoration. In the first three years, some restored sections reached comparable or even higher species richness, than reference sections. The development of the assemblage in each stream is different, and the greatest difference is between Hučina stream, which belong to the floodplain of Studená Vltava, and Jedlový and Žlebský brook, both belonging to the floodplain of Teplá Vltava. While the effect of time on the aquatic community in Hučina is unequivocal, that is not the case in Jedlový and Žlebský brook. The EPT assemblage is influenced by seasonality and type of mesohabitat, with pools being the most different. The comparison of the assemblages of Jedlový and Žlebský stream before and after the restoration revealed, that a distinct change in species composition occurred at three out of four restored sections. Moreover, comparison of restored and reference sections showed, that the species composition of EPT assemblages in restored part of the Hučina stream resembles the reference more closely, than in other streams, and these assemblages are already fairly similar after three years. Colonisation of the restored streams was undoubtedly successful, but stabilisation of the newly established communities does not typically occur sooner than 5–10 years after restoration measures. Further analyses and long-term monitoring would bring valuable information about the recovery of aquatic communities after a successful, complex restoration.

Se zhoršujícím se stavem vodních toků po celém světě se jejich revitalizace provádějí stále častěji. Cílem revitalizací je obvykle obnovit heterogenitu biotopů a vodních společenstev, a ekosystémové služby toků. Zatímco heterogenitu biotopů je možné obnovit různými revitalizačními opatřeními, obnova společenstev může být limitována množstvím faktorů. Nejčastěji to bývá absence přirozených společenstev v okolí, odkud by bylo možné kolonizovat revitalizované toky, a špatná kvalita vody. Pokud je však kolonizační potenciál společenstva v okolí 5 km dostatečný a kvalita vody není negativně ovlivněna zemědělstvím nebo urbanizací, revitalizace vodních toků mohou přispívat k jejich biologické obnově. Revitalizované potoky na Šumavě, Hučina a Jedlový a Žlebský potok mají velký potenciál pro obnovu přirozených společenstev. V rámci komplexních revitalizací byla zrekonstruována jejich původní podoba, což přispělo ke zlepšení hydrologického režimu v nivě toků. Potoky se nacházejí v národním parku, kde je dostatek potenciálních kolonizátorů a dobrá kvalita vody. Obnovu biodiverzity vodního společenství by tak nemělo nic zásadním způsobem limitovat. V diplomové práci se věnuji analýze kolonizace revitalizovaných potoků během prvních tří let po revitalizací larvami jepic (Ephemeroptera), pošvatek (Plecoptera) a chrostíků (Trichoptera), s důrazem na abundanci, druhovou bohatnost a druhovou skladbu společenstev. Porovnávám také revitalizované potoky s referenčními toky v okolí a společenstva dvou potoků se společenstvy, které se v nich vyskytovaly před revitalizací. Všechny revitalizované toky byly již během prvního roku osídlené jepicemi, pošvatkami a chrostíky v abundancích srovnatelných s přirozenými toky a některé revitalizované úseky dosáhly během prvních tří let srovnatelné nebo dokonce vyšší druhové bohatosti jako referenční úseky v okolí. Vývoj jednotlivých potoků a jejich úseků v čase je různý, přičemž největší rozdíl je mezi Hučinou, která patří do povodí Studené Vltavy, a dvojicí Jedlový a Žlebský potok, které patří do povodí Teplé Vltavy. Zatímco na Hučině je vliv času na druhovou skladbu evidentní, vývoj v čase v Jedlovém a Žlebském potoce je spíše neuspořádaný. Taxocenóza jepic, pošvatek a chrostíků je do určité míry ovlivněna sezónou a příslušností k mezohabitatu, přičemž nejodlišnější jsou společenstva tůní. Porovnání společenstev Jedlového a Žlebského potoka před revitalizací a po ní ukázalo, že na třech ze čtyř revitalizovaných lokalit došlo k výrazné změně druhového složení. Porovnání společenstev revitalizovaných a referenčních úseků zas odhalilo, že společenstvo revitalizované Hučiny se přiblížilo tomu přirozenému více, než v ostatních tocích a po třech letech jsou již podobná. Kolonizace revitalizovaných toků byla úspěšná, ale k stabilizaci bioty obvykle nedojde dříve než 5–10 let po zásahu. Další analýzy a dlouhodobý monitoring by přinesly cenné informace o regeneraci společenstva vodních bezobratlých po rozsáhlé revitalizací.
