Pioneers in politics. Women in structures of political parties in Moravia before 1914

Abstract:

Předložená práce si kladla za cíl analyzovat proces zapojování žen do Lidové strany (pokrokové), Národní strany katolické, Křesťansko-sociální strany a zemských organizací Českoslovanské sociálně-demokratické strany dělnické, České agrární strany a České strany národně sociální na Moravě. Tento proces byl sledován od konce 90. let 19. století do vypuknutí první světové války. Výzkum provedený zejména na základě dobových periodik potvrdil, že zmíněné politické strany vytvářely většinově vstřícné podmínky pro vstup žen do svých zájmových satelitů, a to nejen ženských. Hlavní zjištění této práce tak narušuje dosavadní interpretace vázané na narativ o nepřejícím prostředí politických stran k politickému aktérství žen. Průměr ženské části členské základny se v některých katolických, socialistických a agrárních mládežnických a odborových svazech pohyboval dokonce mezi 30–40 % a jeho celkový počet pak stoupal do řádů tisíců. Oproti tomu zůstaly některé mládežnické a odborové platformy národních sociálů a též agrárníků ženám uzavřeny. Z předložené práce vyplývá, že ženské aktivity byly soustředěny na sociální záležitosti, oblast související s mateřstvím a společenské vyžití. Ženy se však před rokem 1914 zapojovaly do všech rovin práce v politických stranách. Vyjma volebního aktu a kandidatury ve volbách, které byly dobovou legislativou vyloučeny, se na ni podílely coby pasivní pozorovatelky, pomocné síly při politických kampaních či odebíratelky politického tisku. Nejschopnější z nich se politicky školily na řečnických kurzech a přebíraly roli agitátorek. Přestože ženy vykonávaly převážně servisní úkony, jejich aktivity je nutné interpretovat jako politickou činnost v jejím širokém pojetí. Jejich účelem bylo financovat stavby dělnických a katolických domů či stávkový fond, vychovat novou generaci voličů, ale též seznámit ženy s politickým prostředím. Ženy byly politickými stranami považovány za jednu z posledních „nevyužitých“ zájmových skupin. Politické strany vytvářely kolem roku 1900 své „ženské programy“, ve kterých prezentovaly svou vizi ženského ideálu. Upřednostňovaly v nich většinou umírněné formy feminity. Mezi požadavky, o které se všech pět politických táborů zasazovalo, bylo dívčí školství a nejrůznější sociální iniciativy, ať už šlo o zřizování azylových domů, sirotčinců či zprostředkovatelen práce pro pracující ženy. Volební právo žen pro mě zůstalo diskutabilním bodem. Vzhledem k rychlé politizaci veřejného prostoru byly politické strany nuceny své teze o ženách kolem roku 1910 dále posunout směrem k rovnoprávnějšímu zastoupení žen ve svém aparátu.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyze the process of inclusion of women into The People's (Progressive) Party, The National Catholic Party, The Christian Social Party and the land organizations of The Czechoslovak Social Democratic Workers' Party, The Czech Agrarian Party and The Czech National Social Party in Moravia. Mostly based on the analysis of periodicals, the analysis covers the process in the period between late 1890s and the beginning of WW1. The research confirmed that the researched parties created conditions that were mostly favourable for entry of women into their interest groups far beyond their female-exclusive structures. The main outcome of this thesis is disruption of the theory of the political parties being unwilling to create an adequate environment for political participation of women. The average female representation in the membership base of certain Catholic, Socialist and Agrarian youth groups and trade unions even ranged between 30 and 40 %, and their total numbers were in thousands. On the other hand, some youth and trade union platforms of Nation Social Workers as well as Agrarians have indeed remained closed to women. The thesis has found out that women´s activities were focused on social and maternal issues and social life and entertainment. However, before 1914, women were active in all levels of political work. With the exception of voting and suffrage, which were excluded by contemporary legislation, they still participated in elections as passive audience, auxiliary forces in political campaigns or subscribers to political press. The most capable of them were politically trained in rhetoric courses and took part as agitators. Although women took part mostly as invisible participants of political life, their effort has to be interpreted, in its broader meaning, as a political activity. Their purpose was to subsidize construction of Catholic or Workers’ Halls or strike funds, as well as to raise a new generation of voters, but also to make the political life familiar to women. The political parties considered women to be one of the last untapped interest groups. Around 1900, political parties were creating their „ women´s programmes“ in which they presented their vision of femininity. Among demands that all five political camps pushed for was female education, as well as various social initiatives, e. g. establishing social asylums, orphanages or employment offices for working women. Women's suffrage generally remained a problematic topic. Considering the rapid politicization of the public space, the political parties were forced to revise their visions of women around 1910 toward a more equal representation of women in their apparatus.
