Social Identity of Men in Grandparenthood

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá sociální identitou mužů v prarodičovství. Prarodičovství vymezuje jako životní období, které jedinci přináší především radost a spokojenost, na druhé straně je ale zároveň zdrojem obav, strachu a v neposlední řadě také uvědomování si svého vlastního stáří. V mnoha zemích západní společnosti je prarodičovství spojeno zejména s babičkami, zatímco dědečkové jsou vnímáni jako méně aktivní v interakci s vnoučaty. Tato práce nabízí alternativu v podobě konceptu nového dědečkovství vymezeného R. Mannem a G. Leesonem v prvním desetiletí 21. století, který stojí v opozici ke konceptu tvrdého muže definovaného E. Badinterovou. Koncept tvrdého muže shrnuje veškeré tradiční stereotypy o mužích do jednoho celku a utváří muže vyhýbajícího se jakýmkoli osobním projevům charakteristickým pro ženy. Naproti tomu nový dědeček je muž dobrovolně a s láskou pečující o druhé, muž, který se nebojí dát najevo ženskou stránku své osobnosti. Analytická část práce vychází z osmi polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s dědečky a nabízí náhled do sociální identity dědečka v rámci uvedených konceptů. Výsledky navíc naznačují, že vybraní dědečkové se aktivně angažují v životech svých vnoučat, čímž se podílejí na tvorbě sociální identity muže, která se neshoduje s tradiční definicí maskulinity, a lze je tedy označit jako nové dědečky.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the social identity of male grandparents. Grandparenthood is defined as period of life that brings the feeling of joy and happiness to the individuals, on the other hand, grandparenting is a source of worries, fear and realizing of individual’s own age. In many west countries, grandparenting is associated especially with grandmothers, while grandfathers are perceived as less active in interaction with their grandchildren. The thesis offers an alternative concept called “new grandfatherhood” defined by R. Mann and G. Leeson in the first decade of 21st century, which stands in opposition to the concept of tough guy defined by E. Badinter. The concept of tough guy summarizes all the traditional stereotypes about men in one unit and creates man refusing any personal expressions characteristic for women. In contrast, the new grandfather is a man caring for others willingly and with love, a man, who is not afraid to show the feminine part of his personality. The analytical part is based on eight interviews with grandfathers and provides insight into the social identity of grandfather within these concepts. In addition, the results suggests that selected grandfathers are actively engaged in the lives of their grandchildren and thus contribute to the formation of the social identity of a man, which does not correspond with the traditional definition of masculinity, and they can therefore be described as new grandfathers.
