Shifts of Point of View in Translations of Hemingway's Memoir A Moveable Feast

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vypravěčskou perspektivou v autobiografii a zkoumá, k jakým změnám této perspektivy dochází během překladu. Jako základ pro analýzu slouží Hemingwayův memoár A Moveable Feast a jeho dva překlady do češtiny od Stanislava Mareše a Rudolfa a Luby Pellarových. Vypravěčská perspektiva je představena z pohledu naratologie jako pozice vypravěče vůči vyprávěným událostem a jako schopnost textu vyjadřovat názory a postoje. Tento druhý typ je ve zdrojovém textu a jeho překladech analyzován především se zaměřením na prezentaci řečových a myšlenkových aktů, deiktické výrazy, modalitu a hodnoticí adjektiva a příslovce. Důraz je kladen na nutnost rozlišovat mezi vypravěčem a postavou v autobiografii, protože tito dva účastníci vyprávěcí komunikační situace nejsou totožní. Manuální analýza zdrojového textu a jeho překladů ukazuje, že překladatelé občas provádějí změny zejména při překladu polopřímé řeči, deiktických výrazů já, ty, tehdy, předminulého času a při překladu hodnoticích adjektiv a adverbií, která mají tendenci intenzifikovat. To vede k posunu vypravěčské perspektivy a pozměněnému obrazu postavy, o které text vypráví.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on point of view in autobiography and explores its shifts caused by translation. Hemingway’s memoir A Moveable Feast and its two translations into Czech by Stanislav Mareš and Rudolf and Luba Pellar have been chosen as the basis for the analysis. The concept of point of view is introduced from the narratological perspective as the narrator’s position in relation to the narrated events and as the ability of the text to express beliefs and attitudes. The latter type of point of view is explored in the source text and the target texts especially with the focus on speech and thought presentation, deixis, modality and evaluation adjectives and adverbs. Importance is put into the need to differentiate between the narrator and the character in autobiography, because these two participants of the narrative communication situation are not identical. The manual analysis of the source text and the target texts shows that translators perform occasional changes especially in the translation of free indirect speech, deictic expressions I, you, then, the past perfect tense and evaluation adjectives and adverbs, which they tend to intensify. This leads to shifts in point of view of the text and to a distorted image of the persona whom the text describes.
